2 new comet goldfish
« on: January 11, 2010, 02:59:47 PM »

Hi - have just brought 2 new comet goldfish placed in a 60litre tank (only those 2 in the tank) with filter and 2 living plants. They seem to be either following each other around with the same one always behind the other or bumping into each other and being quiet bousterous. Also they seem to like eating the gravel.

Just wanted to make sure that this is normal behaviour.

Yup that's very normal behavior for goldfish. They enjoy the company of other goldfish so they can do this all day.  Grin

Fish are not supposed to EAT gravel.  If they are actually eating it, then it can get stuck in their intestines.  The behavior you are seeing could be spawning behavior or deciding who is going to be the alpha.

Your fish are probably not eating the gravel but picking it up and spitting it out, sort of a fishes way to vacuum in search of tidbits of food.  Fish chase each other in play and during spawning.  It is not uncommon for 2 fish of the same gender to participate in spawning like behavior either.

Our fishies do that, too.  I find comets are a bit more "hyper" than other goldfish- you may notice them doing laps back and forth together.

We bought our 2 comet goldfish (about 5-6 cm big) last week, they live in a 34 l tank and do the same thing.
They swim arround, backwards, forwards, up and down and they chase each other. They suck on gravel and nibble on plants. Seem to be very happy.
Hope that will continue. It is lovely to watch them.

Hello everybody,
I just registered, I think this is a brilliant site to share information.

We do have 2 little comet goldfish, their names are Humphrey and Hepsiba. We bought them only one week ago, never had goldfish before. The tank we had first, was too small -did research on the net- after we discovered some scales missing of our fish we quickly bought a bigger tank and moved them today. They were quiet only for a few minutes, now they explore their new home already nibbling on the new plants, playing with airbubbles, chasing each other.
We hope the scales will regrow soon and Humphrey and Hepsiba will be happy for many years.

Tank size 34l
ph about 7,5
Temp 24 C

As we are new in keeping goldfish, we are happy for any information we can get and also share our new experience.
By the way: how much food do goldfish need, as they seem to be hungry all the time?
And what can they sense, perceive? Can they hear or feel noise like music or vacuuming or voices? They already seem to recognise me and know exactly when I feed them. Our tank is accessible from all sides as it sits on the benchtop in the kitchen      ( open plan ) they follow us to one side when we are in the kitchen and to the other side when we stay in the dining area.

Looking forward to sharing your experiences

We do watch our new little buddies each day, looking for changes etc. We observed that one of them has got a more pronounced V-shape in their tail fin than the other. And it is a little bigger than the other one. Is it imagination ... or... is it a difference in gender Huh?
One male one female?Huh Wink Eventually we'll have babies?Huh Wink

Does anybody know?

THANKS

Hanna: How nice that they're enjoying themselves!
Either way, your tank seems to be okay (:

Now, for my feeding tips: I've read that a healthy fish is not starving, but a little hungry Wink So feed your fish all they can eat for about 2 minutes, twice a day. Make sure that they eat everything you put there!
Do you feed them flakes or pellets by the way? It's always good to have some variety in the diet, it will keep your fish healthier and happier (: So get a few different kinds of staple foods for them. I've got Hikari staple and color-enhancing pellets, both sinking and floating. Sinking, because goldfish enjoy looking for food in the bottom substrate, and floating because it's easier to control the amount fed. I also give them blood worms or tubifex worms twice a week to add extra protein, which is essential while they're young and growing! Finally, don't forget to give them some fresh vegetables as a treat Wink This give them extra vitamins and fibre, and helps the digestion a lot (: My goldfish love peeled peas! Just buy a bag of frozen (without salt) peas, thaw them and pop them out of their shells. I'm sure you've heard about that before d: You could also try experimenting with cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, oranges... But don't leave any of it in your tank for more than 24 hours~

And goldfish have ears, and nostrils, for the same reasons as humans do (: But the ears of a goldfish are quite hidden by the gill covers, and they can easily hear and recognize voices. I've also heard that they can smell when you cook Wink
But fish recognize their owner's footsteps as first thing. They feel the vibrations in the water, and they know that it's you who's coming to feed them before they can see you (: (They can see pretty well too...)

But it's pretty difficult to gender goldfish unless they are ready to spawn. The male will then develop little white dots on his gill covers and pectoral fins (They should be rough to the touch) and the female would swell with eggs. She would also get chased by the male who's trying to encourage her to lay the eggs. I think their size difference is just a matter of age. But it might also depend on how they were kept and fed when they were young. Since some small fish always are more eager to get the food than others (:

I'd love to see some photos of your fish sometime! What colors are they?

Hi

thanks heaps for all your information.
Humphrey and Hepsiba are happy, they really seem to enjoy their new home. My husband and I put an airstone in as well and they love to swim amongst those bubbles, dive into them and play with them.
I feed them Vita Pet Goldfish Flakes and Vita Pet Goldfish Granules. I heard about peas and zucchini, I think to cut one pea in little pieces will be enough for both of them? Maybe once a week?
They are only small, the most 6 cm long, both a very golden orange, one has got white fins and the other one has got a small white edge on the tail fin. And the scales are growing back. This is really quick.

Before we moved them into the new tank, we also added some Aquarium salt into the water, like a tonic, 1 tablespoon per 20l.

Yes, need to take some photos

I use to give one pea for each fish, and cut them into smaller pieces to they would fit their mouths d:
And yes, you can give it once a week, but only the peas for that day to clear out their digestive tract Cheesy

Hello and Good Morning,

8 am here and I thought I post some pics of Humphrey and Hepsiba. Hard to get good photos because they can't stand still Cheesy, lol
I couldn't believe my eyes yesterday evening when I fed them granules how fussy they can be. First they spat them out, were not that excited about their food but in the end they ate it.
This morning I gave them flakes and they jumped up and down to get it and the food was gone in no time.

And I also believe that they can beg for food and it is hard for "mummy" to resist and not give more, but I don't.

Wishing everybody a great day

Please remove the pot from the plants! It prevents the roots from growing properly and the plant won't feel happy at all ):
Anyways, looks like there's some Canadian Pondweed (that elodea you mentioned) and hornwort. But I'm not sure about the one in the pot... I don't know that many different plants d: There should've been some kind of label with it though.. still have it?

Unfortunately I do not have the label, I searched on the net, the other plant could be AMAZON SWORD PLANT ??
Will unpot it with the next waterchange.

I also discovered, that the aquarium light creates lots of heat. I had the water temperature up to 29 C so I had to put the air con on to cool it down. But our 2 little fish were still ok. I wonder what temperatures comets can take.
It is only early autumn with outside  temp about 27 C, winter will be about 22 C but summer will be hot again arround the 30 mark. My husband and I are thinking to buy a cooler or a light which does not create heat.

Might be it C: It sounds kinda' familiar!
Another thing about the plants and their pots, is that this material they are grown into isn't very good to keep in a tank as it could easily pollute the water, so make sure you remove that too!

Oh o_O That's rather strange... but I had some similar lamp in my tank as well. Although, since I didn't have a heater, it was just good that the water got a little bit warmer during the days so my fish wouldn't be cold. (My water is only around 19-20 degrees Celsius) Anyway, I've got a different lamp now! : D
Oh, do you have any glass or anything between the lamp and the water?

Yes, there is a cover to protect the lamp from the water.

looks like we need to get another lamp and in the meantime keep the aircondition and ceiling fan running,
don't want to have boiled fish.

According to the plants, I rinsed them thoroughly before I put them in, like the gravel and the stones and I must say I enjoyed it so much to "landscaping" a little garden for our fishies Cheesy

Yeah, I enjoy it pretty much myself (: Like last time when I had bought a few pretty pebbles for my fish <3

Hope it's gonna help with a new lamp! It's quite important to keep the temperature constant C:

Yep, we're going today for another lamp or a chiller for the tank. It is an AquaOne 380.

And tomorrow is the big day for the weekly water change. Nice fresh water with salt.
I want to prepare it today to make sure the water quality is ok, like ph, chemicals neutralised, etc.
I do have a plastic container to prepare, it is only used for our fishies.
Humphrey and Hepsiba are getting our full attention, they are our babies now, lol Cheesy Cheesy

G'day to everybody,

just had my first experience feeding peas to Humphrey and Hepsiba. They got a piece in their mouth, spat it out and let me know this is yuck.... should have seen their little faces. Shocked They kept floating in the middle of the tank looking at me, went down got a piece and spat it out again and continued looking at me as if I was lunatic... so what did fish-mummy do? Guess. I felt guilty and so sorry not to provide a yummy meal so I gave some flakes and our fishies were alive again, chasing the flakes which were gone in a coupple of minutes. I think this is it with peas for our 2 little ones, lol
So tomorrow I'll clean the pea pieces out too

...or did I do sth wrong in preparing those peas? I took 2 out of the frozen pea bag, quickly boiled them, pealed the hard skin off and cut them into small pieces...

Try just thawing the peas slightly, pop them out of the skin, smush slightly and throw them in the tank.  That's what I do.  Anything cooked, boiled or nuked loses nutrients.

Yes, that is an Amazon Sword plant.  We have two, and our fish love nibbling them!  Don't feel too bad about them not liking peas.  We have three fish, and one loves his veggies, one will eat them on occasion, and one is just a "pellet junkie" and won't touch them unless he's really hungry.  Sometimes I can get them to eat green leaf lettuce (rinsed and put in with a clip with a suction cup on it- sold in most places where they sell fish), but not always.  Don't worry too much, since pellets should provide most of their nutrition.  It also doesn't hurt to keep trying to get them to eat their veggies. Wink
And yes, they can smell cooking. Smiley  I know this because they head straight to the corner of the tank that faces the kitchen when I cook something, especially something aromatic, like leftover Thai, grilled cheese, or brownies, and beg.

Lol, wonder what they smelled the other day when my dear hubby burnt 2 meatpies to charcoal....poor things... and poor hubby, he was devastated...

And with the peas I decided to have another go next week ( thawed ones ) as I could not see one piece left this morning.
Either they were cheating me and ate them after, or I will find them on the filter pad. Their bellies seem to be full and they poo like little world champions, lol Grin

I think our fishies have got a strong personality and they know exactly what they want Wink and gee, they are good beggers

Just curious but what is a meat pie?
Is it something like we call in the US a Pot Pie?  or like a Pasty?

yes, they come in all different flavours, classic beef meat pie, or italian beef meat pie, this one is with parmiggiano cheese, also chicken-veggie. It is a quick yummy meal and I do serve them with mashed potatoes, gravy and PEAS... and I like to sprinkle grated cheese on top of the hot crispy baked pies

This is the opportunity to keep 2-3 frozen peas aside, thaw them chop them fine and feed them to our fishies.
As I am at home today and arround our babies, they follow me to each side of the tank and opened their little mouth quite wide. I told them, they have to wait until Daddy is back from work, lol

I must admit it is hard to resist, as I gave them a very small snack after I changed the water. They obeyed and sat stil in the corner on the bottom of the tank while I was cleaning their home. So I thanked them with a tiny little snack being such good children, lol Cheesy
