Algae!? NO WAY! Ewww!!

Okay, weeird!! There have been greenish-brown spots all over the bettas tank, and now there's brown spots on the ribbon plants. (read last question) How the HECK do ribbon plants get brown spots on them when everything's perfect? They don't! It has to be algae. Truly the grossest moment of my fish-keeping adventure so far. I reached into the tank pulled a plant, and tried rubbing the spots off, because earlier they looked slightly hairy, browness moving in the filter current. Ewwwwwww!! It came off! There's only one little 8 month betta in that tank, had him for a month. I am truly disgusted. What the heck is up!? (It is a filtered 5 gallon.)

Are you changing the water regularly/testing the water?
Algae are usually caused by too high nitrates = Overstocking or overfeeding.
How long are you keeping the light on? Max 10-12 hours are ideal, but you may have to cut it down with an hour or two until the problem is resolved. Warmer water also encourages algae growth.

Okay, nossie..
-changing and testing regularly... perfect!
-there's only one halfmoon betta and I make sure he eats everything. I feed once a day.
-the lights are on about 9/10 hrs.
-the only thing I can think of is that I recently moved the tank, but there's not really anymore sunlight.
The temp is 76.

Arr, I don't do Fahrenheit D: But... I think 76 should be fine?? If I remember correctly that is...
Maybe you should introduce an apple snail or two to eat the algae?
Or you could just give the ornaments a thorough scrub and see if the algae come back..

76 is about 25 celcicus. however that's spelled.
Is there a way to get it off the plants, though? All I have are live plants, no deco.
Anubias, water wisteria and ribbon plants.
Would the snails get the plant algea? and lastly, will/could the algae kill the plants??

You could try to gently scrub the plants... but even better if you'd give them a bath in some algae killing stuff. Like you take a bucket or so of the tank water and add some algae-murder pills or liquid and let the plants bathe there for a while, but you first need to find a fitting kind, I don't really trust those, but it might be worth a try.
The Anubias should be okay if you scrub the algae gently off the leaves.
The snails would probably go climbing onto the plants too
But it seems weird that algae would suddenly start blooming like that o_O

Algae-murdering pills!
Okay, will try to find that.
I'm at the point where I want to just jam those plants into a bowl and buy something hard.
Cave, something like that.
It's disgusting to have to sleep beside that tank.
Do you know where to possibly get those? I know we're on two diffrent continents, but any ideas?
I don't think petco or petsmart sells them, and I know my lfs doesn't...need another lfs.

Man.........
There's a bloom going on in my goldfish's tank, too!
With that one, it may be due to overstocking.
Two moors about 6mos in a 10?
Gosh...and they eat almost everything I feed them. They're fed twice a day.
It has to be me!

I found some anti-algae tabs (more serious name xD) in the regular pet shop over here, so I think they should sell them just about anywhere, it's always worth looking
Unless you meant the snails... in that case, you can find them in the same type of shop, but it may be good to wait for a new shipment or ask the people at the shop if they're gonna order some in case you can't find any snails
Be sure to pick apple snails! Most smaller ones multiply to the degree where they're a plague D:
Did you test the water in the moors' tank? It's only good, in my opinion, to not cut down on feedings but rather increase the amount of water changes. They won't feel bad being well-nourished and in fresh water

Oh, yeah, I meant the tabs. I've had a apple snail before. Mr Apple went to the big tank a few months ago..We may need a Mr. apple II and Mrs. apple here soon!
Okay, I need to test it.
I do a water change every friday. Is that often enough?
I hear SOO much conflicting info on the water changes.
Also, I gravel vac once a month, is that enough?

Gravel vac every single time you change the water. When keeping goldfish there's such a load of sludge collecting over a week that it's ridiculous. Try testing the water every second day for a while in the goldfish tank and that should show you whether you're changing the water often enough. If the nitrates build up too much over a short time, you'll have to change it more often. And remember, no less than 50%!

I have brown algae spring up occasionally in my tank, though I vacuum the gravel every week, keep my nitrates at about .5 ppm, and do a 50% water change. The only thing that really helps (unless you buy an algae-eliminating product) is an aquarium glass scrubber or an old toothbrush (CLEAN by fish standards) and good ol' fashioned elbow grease. When you do that weekly it really helps.

Ditto Goldiegirl and my nitrates are at the most .5ppm too... scrub and vacumme and elbow grease is the best form of control.... some of those algae products have large warnings about being dangerous to fish if not used correctly, so they worry me a bit... the magnet cleaner is good too, I wet the outside of the glass when I use it, it seems to glide better... hope your recovery is going well Goldie. cheers > Ron

I have a couple of snails and a pleco to deal with the algae... c: But aside from that, I'm scrubbing them pebbles and glasses like a madman D:

Thank you, Ron, for your kind words. I'm doing quite well now.
I've never tried a magnet! Good idea.
Nossie, every time I get a snail my goldies kill it.
they are just so dang curious they peck it non-stop. When they do that, it won't come out of it's shell and eventually starves. And lol, I know how that is!!!

Years ago we got a snail and a goldfish in a vase and my sister swears the snail let out some slime and here fish tried to eat it but it suffocated and died. I don't beleive that.

My Betta lives two Nerite snails and an Amano shrimp. No algae, in fact, I have to feed the snails. Maybe just put one Nerite snail. They are algae eating machines.

Gldiegirl: Poor snails! D8
My goldfish only nibble the shell once or twice before they give up
I think they view them as moving rocks or something...
In any case they lose interest really fast since there
could be
food somewhere else in the tank... xD
