12 gallon is just enough for ONE goldfish. Your tank is way overstocked which leads to problems, which already have started. At this stage you will need to do a 50% water change every 2nd day, add beneficial bacteria every day for the first week at least. The fresh water you add must be conditioned too to remove chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals from the water.

The best thing to do would be -providing you want to keep all 4 fish- to get a 40-50 gal tank, set it up, make sure the water is conditioned and has got the right pH, move the fish but add beneficial bacteria every day for the first week. Best beneficial bacteria is STABILITY from Seachem, imo. Best conditioner is SuperChlor or Melachlor from (Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.) , imo. But PRIME from Seachem is very, very good too.
The 12 gal tank you can keep as a QT tank.

Test for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate regularly. The test results will show you how much the tank is cycled. Do waterchanges accordingly. Add an airstone to your tank to oxygenate the water.

Also read the Sticky in "Health and Illness"

If you cannot afford another tank, it is the best for your fish to stay alive and not suffering to return 3 of them to the petstore.

Thank you sooo much! I am still in the planning stage, and doing plenty of research before buying the things I need to set up. This is definitely helped! I didn't know you had to put the bag into the tank, and let the fish out gradually!!!! Thank oyu!!!!

Putting the bag in the tank is pretty much a load of crap :C The goldfish won't be used to the water in a few hours anyway and keeping it soaked in its own waste for that long is really not a good idea Undecided So at most open the bag and leave it in for half an hour for the temperature only, but if the temperature is the same you can just let the fish out Smiley

i hv 15gal tank..and 4 blackmoor. fishes are very small in size...is that ok?? Huh

you're obviously aware that you are going to need a bigger tank asap.

You will need to monitor the water quality very carefully, so go to the store and invest in a kit which measures all 6 critical parameters..NH3, NO2,NO3,pH,KH, CL-

buy the best kit that you can afford as you will need to be testing frequently.


Because your tank is so small, you should be changing at least 50-75% of the water every other day....add stress zyme and tap water conditioner with each water change

It's going to be hard work, but your fish will survive if you can maintain scrupulously good water.


Don't beat yourself up, many of us started with small tanks at first, we learnt the hard way too!

i'm literally a newbie in this field. Roll Eyes
actually my tank size is 2ft*1ft*1ft. i dont know exactly how much gal it would be.. Embarrassed

and each of my fish is not more than 1.5inch in size.
i have installed under-gravel filter..and thought it does not need daily water changing Embarrassed and i have not changed water in 3 days Sad but although fishes are seemed to be happy! Huh and water is crystal clear..do i need to change water?

Yes the tank would be too small. You need a 3 foot by 1 1/2 foot by 1/2 foot about to house those fish. Its 40 gallons. Because the fish will grow to 8 in each.

I would change the water every three days 50%.

Sunshade, welcome to the forum. In Scriven's absence I will attempt to explain things. Your tank is 15 gallons, I checked. This is large enough for one fish (it doesn't matter how small they are-one fish). How long has your tank been set up? If it has been less than 6 weeks or so then your tank is cycling. This is basically how cycling works; fish produce ammonia as waste all the time, it is very toxic, bacteria will build up in your filter and in the gravel which (through a complicated process) will neutralize the ammonia and convert it into nitrates which are much less toxic. While cycling you need to do very frequent water changes- every day or every other day. You can't see ammonia and nitrites so they will be present in clean looking water. I recommend taking some tank water and saving it in a tupperware, then change the water, take the sample to a petstore and they will test it for you so you can see that there are waste products in the water.  Now even if your tank has cycled it is very overstocked so will require frequent water changes regardless. Now on to the filter. Underground filters are the least effective of all filters, they are rubbish in my opinion. You will need a canister or large power filter to go with the 40-50 gallon tank you will need. Goldfish can live more than 30 years and grow very large. They will not live long in a 15 gallon tank so please get them a bigger tank very soon. If it is not too late maybe you'll want to take the fish back and get something like a betta?
