« on: January 15, 2012, 08:44:28 AM »

hello everyone  Smiley im new and i need help wit my 55 gal setup..let me start by sayn i have not bought my fish , i have done my research on that part lol i kno bout the nitrogen cycle Smiley n i also havnt bought the tank yet
i need help wit the nitrogen cycle..should i do a fishless cycle? n should i do water changes during the cycle? or would it b best if i ddnt?  Huh
my next question is wat kind of filter? i kno it should be one that should do 10x the size of the tank.but should it be internal or external filter??.i plan on having a common goldfish, shubunkin, and two koi in the tank., or is that 2 many fish for a 55 gal tank?  Huh
and last question is wat kind of live plants can i put in the tank and should i wait till after the tank is cycled b4 i add the plants to it??

Any and all advice will b greatly appreciated thanks in advance for the help

There are so many threads on this subject already :/ Go read some stickies on the "General Discussion" section.. There is a thread on cycling, stocking, maintenance and feeding.

You can't have koi in a tank, they grow far too big for that.
External filter with 550gph minimum and rather pick a maximum of 4 commons/shubunkins/comets.
Add the plants before the cycle and if you have any, use old tank water to help it cycle or start off with one goldfish in the tank and introduce the others after a month each to make sure the ammonia doesn't get out of hand.

Dots, where do live? It matters because certain brands are named different depending on what country you are in. I could make a recommendation and you would never be able to find it if you aren't in the US or vice versa.
As Nossie said, we have plenty on this subject on here.

General rule with filtration style and effectiveness, from least effective to most...... Under gravel, internal power, hang on, external (canister or wet/dry sump). Wet/dry is used mostly in the salt water realm as it allows for placement of equipment in the sump instead of the display tank. The most effective and efficient filter that you could use would be a canister... but remember, not all canisters are created equally.
Answer question #1 and I will be more than glad to help you out.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Established plants" and suddenly switching to "new bulbs" xD Sorry!
But you can buy new plants and new bubs, it has nothing to do with how the tank cycles or anything so.. that's up to you Cheesy (If this helped?)

Also in a 55 gallon tank, have you considered perhaps keeping fancy varieties instead of the single tailed?

I believe 55 gallons is 250 litres.... so with the stocking rule of 40 litres per fish, you could have a happy bunch of 5 fantail goldfish, instead of just 2 single tailed goldfish. As single tailed goldfish need so much more space for swimming and may even need to have the tank upgraded to a larger tank or even better a pond, later on in their lives.

I have thought bout getting the fancy goldfish.. Smiley but I really want common goldfish I don't know why but I like them more than the fancy.. My ultimate plan is when my fiancÚ and I get married and move in to our new house together we going to build a pond for the goldfish and maybe some koi depending on how much space we have then I thought that we could get some fancy goldfish to put in the 55  lol Smiley but that's awhile away tho lol  Grin

Sounds like a lovely idea! Smiley I'd have a pond too if it wasn't for the fact that I love seeing my goldfish by just tilting my head a bit, not leaving the house in the process Wink I just like having them close <3

You could have 3-4 commons in the 55 if you want though Smiley

Hmmm I'd say maybe stick to 2 or 3 goldfish.

If you aren't sure how long it will be until you get a pond, you would want the fish to have as much space as possible until then Smiley

I know the rule of thumb is 40 litres per goldfish, but I really wouldn't apply this to single tailed, purely because they grow more and require more swimming room than fancy goldfish (as they are quite speedy, Lucky often does 'laps' of the tanks XD). I would double it and say 80 litres per fish at a minimum, but if you can give it more space, then absolutley do.

Dots, I currently have a common goldfish on her own, she has been moved from a 21 litre tank to a 90-100 litre tank, that is 3 foot long and she is going to grow out of this. She is only a baby at 3 inches, but when she reaches around half her potential size -so 5/6 inches- I am either going to upgrade her tank to something huge like a 6 foot tank or build a pond, or if those options fail, find someone who has a pond.
Given that she's probably stunted from being in a small tank for too long, I am not sure how long it will take her to grow, hence why I'm going by her size as an indicator of when to upgrade not by any time length.

So you can keep 2 or 3 single tailed fish in a 55 gallon/250 litre tank as a temporary home, but they will need to be upgraded. Goldfish grow pretty fast, so please keep this in mind. You may need to upgrade their tank, depending on how far away in the future the pond is.

All the best with the fish Dots, I would love to hear how things go  Smiley

Thanks for all the great advice  Smiley lol umm the pond is appox. 1 -2 years or could be less than that I'm not sure yet lol Huh I think I will just put 3 goldfish in there And then go by their size  Smiley I'm so excited can't wait lol but it will prolly be about another month or two before we have the money for tank n filter lol not to even mention decorations n gravel XD. Speaking of gravel do y'all prefer like the natural look or colorful gravel.. I think I like the natural look instead of the colorful gravel but I could use some advice lol  Shocked  oh sugar I'm late for work lol gota go

The fish prefer natural colors in their tanks Smiley Which is pretty obvious, I also think the patterns of the goldfish show much better against a more neutral colored gravel.

I use Aquatan by Sera or Stress coat by API as water conditioner and Easy Life Fluid bio filter medium for beneficial bacteria (it has both in one) and Stress zyme by API together with stress coat whenever I have those on hand.
Easy balance could be used, but I'm not entirely sure if it's necessary as long as you keep sensible stocking levels in your tank and keep up the regular water changes Smiley (50% every single week)

Easy balance uses an ion-exchange resin to control the water parameters. One of the effects of which is to increase the CO2, which is beneficial to your plants . It swaps the cations of the nitrates to render them safe(r) for the fish whilst still retaining their effectiveness as plant fertilizers. You need to provide extra oxygenation during use

Despite what it says on the packet you still need to do regular vacuuming of the gravel and water changes

Find a product that you feel comfortable using ,and your fish are happy with  Grin

I use Stress Coat as my water conditioner and Stress Zyme as my beneficial bacteria Smiley

If the pond is less than 2 years away, you should be okay, but do keep an eye on the goldfish growth, it's difficult to judge sometimes when is best to move them.
For example my Lucky grew an inch or two, in the first few months I had her, then she just stopped growing and has probably had her growth stunted from being in a tiny tank for so long,  but this was a common goldfish in a 5 gallon tank! You will notice when their growth slows or stops. I imagine it won't be as quickly either, so you should be okay, just keep an eye on them  Smiley

If you haven't brought the tank yet, you could always go for a slightly larger tank now, like a 65 or 70 gallon, it depends on your space and budget really. Oh also try and find a nice long tank, longer tanks allow more swimming space.
So even though my tank is only around 29 gallons -it will need to be upgraded later- even though it's quite small, it is 3 foot in length, so Lucky has tons of space to swim along in, given her current size is 3 inches Smiley

Good luck, be sure to shop around, take your time and have fun Smiley

Thanks  Smiley I was wondering about Tetra AquaSafe has anyone had any experience with that brand??

So basically I could buy n use EasyBalance but I wouldn't have to as long as I have the proper amount of fish n do regular water changes and vacuum gravel?? I think I will just save the money lol  Grin thanks for clearing that up for me Scrivens I hope I understand that right lol
Skwishee, as of now I live with my parents lol and I just got my mom to be somewhat okay with a 55 gal  Cheesy lol I don't want to push my luck too much and I don't have a lot of empty space in my room I wish i did tho because I would love to get a bigger tank
Lol I will keep in mind bout watching their growth Smiley

I would also use the conditioner Smiley And lots of beneficial bacteria! But you wouldn't have to change out the water that often while there are no fish in the tank Smiley
