A question about my fantail goldfish

I have a question about my all white fantail goldfish. I think it may have some poop stuck on the back of its tail fin and i just wanted to know if i should do something about it or if its something that will just disappear. I know its a d*mb question but im new to the fish thing. Heres a pic below. Srry bout the pic being so blurry!

What do you mean stuck on the back of its tail fin? As in some how the poo has attached itself to the fin and is now stuck there? Or it is constipated and not coming out of it's bum? If the first, I highly doubt it is poo and that is more likely some sort of sore or infection. Is there any way you can post a better photo? The one you have already posted unfortunately isn't much help and I am bit confused.

On the tip of its back tail theres a small black spot but im not sure what it is. I think it may be poo but i have no clue. Im just going to keep an eye on it and if it doesnt go away i will have to search more into the topic.

Oh small black spot makes alot more sense. It sounds like ammonia burn which is a common occurence when a tank hasn't cycled and there is too much ammonia present in the tank which poisons your fish internally and externally as you can see. Do you know about the tank cycle? If not I can explain it but I also recommend you should study up on it as it can be a bit confusing.

For now I would buy a test kit and test your water. If you can't do this most pet shops can test the water for you for free. If the tank isn't cycled and there is a lot of ammonia present (there should be none) you should do small water changes about 10-20% every third day or so until it is come down to 0.

You can also treat the ammonia burn with melafix. It will work extremely well but you also have to fix your water quality. I don't know too much about ammonia burn, but I'm sure others on here can you help. I'm pretty certain that is what it is and you do need to do some immediate action as it can kill the fish.

Im only 16 and everything to do with my fish comes out of my budget which isn't a very big one since i'm in school so i cant afford all those chemicals for cycles. My parents wont buy it for me so..... When i was little i had two common goldfish in a ten gallon tank for five years and they were fine so hopefully mine will survive. I don't think the black spots a ammonia burn. Its very small.

Hi Chelsea,

if you want to keep happy and healthy goldfish it is very important to take care of the waterquality... this means you need beneficial bacteria to help with the nitrogen cycle and you need a testkit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH and you need a water conditioner IF you want to keep your fishies for a long time. Goldfish can live up to 20-30 years if they are HAPPY and the proper environment provided. Wink

You don't need any money to cycle a tank. There is things that can help but it is a natural process. This doesn't stop you from going to the pet shop and getting a free or extremely cheap test of your water! It also doesn't stop you from doing small water changes until the ammonia levels has gone down, does it? So you can do this.

Why does it being very small stop it from being an ammonia burn? What makes you say this? Do you know for sure? I don't as I have not seen it but by the sounds of it it really does sound like ammonia burn. Can you not afford about 15 bucks in order to save your fish? If not or if you are not willing to try then you shouldn't have gotten a pet in the first place.

Of course i have fifteen dollars. I love my fish and im glad i got them. Its starting to go away which is y i don't think its ammonia burn. I also change 20% of the water.

Chelsea, everything points towards it to be an ammonia burn, especially if it starts to go away, due to the water changes you do and ammonia to disappear.

I strongly advise you to get a sample of your water to the petstore and get it tested and post the exact results on here for me, please.
I am sorry I didn't think about this opportunity to have your water tested... perhaps because I do it by myself... just didn't come into my head Wink

First of all, no need to buy any kind of beneficial bacteria. Your tank will cycle all by itself Smiley
But for that to be safe for your fish, you need to change about 20% of the water every second day or so, just to be on the safe side! Unless you can bring the water to the pet shop to have it tested Smiley
Don't get discouraged! It's easier than it would seem to keep a goldfish alive and healthy Wink
