Hi again, I have officially upgraded my tank to a 55litre, I also bought some new gravel, I cleaned the gravel although when I put it in the tank (no fish were in the tank at the time)  it was a tad cloudy, which is to be expected, although after placing my fish in for about 2-3 hours they seemed extremely sick, lying at the bottom of the tank dorsal fin down and just swaying side to side with the current.

I took them out and placed them in a different tank with new water, they seemed fine in there. I placed 1 fish back in the large tank later and the next morning he seemed a TAD better swimming around but dorsal fin and tail seem small and contracted.

Any help?

 what type of fish? how many? how long cycled?....



You're the guy that had 4 goldies including a comet in a bowl , right?


55L IS STILL NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR GOLDFISH

Moor, thank you for upgrading your tank.

Its a great start and shoulld only be used as a temporary tank to house 4 goldfish. Since I dont know how many fish you have I'll give you a stocking rule that I didn't use untill a week ago.

20 gallons (80 liters) for the first goldfish and 10 gallons (40 liters) for each other goldfish.

Cleaned gravel with water, I think something that may be causing the problem is that I used hose water, I made sure It wasn't old water sitting there from the last time I used it but who knows.

my fish aren't swimming around like they did when we first got them all they do is lay on the bottom  Sad

Moor, good job on the upgrade, but as it's already been mentioned, you will need to upgrade again.
For 4 fancy goldfish you need a tank size of at least 50 gallons/230 litres. What types are your fish? As Scrivens mentions a comet?
If you do have any single tailed fish i.e. comets/commons, that will change things slightly, as single tailed fish do best in ponds or really large aquaria (I'm talking a 6ft x 3ft tank minimum) so if you're unable to provide either of those, I would consider re-homing the single tailed, perhaps a local neighbour has a pond that has the space to take them?

Also, you mention using water from the hose, but you don't mention adding any water conditioner?
It shouldn't make a massive difference where you get the water from in your house, as long as you add water conditioner.
I've filled Lucky's tank with water from the taps in the kitchen, sometimes the bathroom, sometimes the hose tap outside and it has never made any difference because it's pretty much the same water and I've always added water conditioner.

You didn't mention letting the tank settle for a while. You need to leave the tank without fish for at least 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize. I would recommend leaving it empty for at least a week though or even through cycling. Your fish probably got shocked from the weird temperature and water quality change that is involved when moving to a new environment.

Do please stop wasting your time and money with tiny tanks if you intend to keep goldfish, go straight for the large ones. A 200 liter tank is a very suitable size when it comes to the space it takes, maintaining it and housing fish in.

I have 2 fish as I already gave 2 of them away. Sorry for the confusion.

Yesterday I took out the water and conditioned it (I did in the first place) and let it settle for about 20 hours, I also placed in an old filter which I thought would help as it would have bacteria in/on it.

55 litre's is still too small for 2 fancy goldfish (assuming you no longer have any singled tailed), it'll be fine as a temporary set-up, while you look for a bigger tank.
Remember 20 gallons for the first, 10 gallons for each additional fish, so for 2 you'd need a tank size of - 30 gallons/136 litres Smiley

Has the fishes behaviour changed at all?

I wouldn't put a goldfish in anything smaller than a 150L, for most of my childhood I've had huge, fat fantails in a 100 liter and it looks awfully small when they drift about.. they need some space to turn around as they grow very large Smiley A 150 liter can safely accommodate two goldfish, but as usual, the bigger the better. The 20 gallon rule is starting to look less and less applicable seeing how these fish grow, better to get it right from the start than to have to upgrade along with the size of the fish Smiley

What size is your tank and how many fish are in it?

Do you have a water tester? If you do I would test the water. Also it would be good to do a 50% water change.
