Please help - sick fish!
« on: May 11, 2009, 10:07:41 AM »

Hello,

Can someone please let us know what is wrong with our fantail.  We have had him for about a year now in a 30 gallon fish tank, with another fantail (who is still completely healthy and a few months younger than him).

We have changed the water (30% change) and checked the ph levels but still his health is getting worse.
It started a week ago, his left eye started bleeding (we thought that he had hit his eye) but then the eye started to get cloudy.  The next day his other eye started to get cloudy.  He has stopped eating, and his tail is clamped.  He is changing in color (becoming more pale).

We bought salt, it has not helped.  We have bought the drops, thinking it was an infection (cloudy eye), this has not helped either.

Now he goes to where the light is strongest and stays in the corner.  It looks as though he has lost vision because he does not see the flakes when we feed them.  We tried taking him out of the environment and putting him by himself but then he started to get really stressed out, so we put him back.

On his body, his scales are starting to look like they are getting damaged/flaking.  He is starting to have difficulty swimming straight (you can clearly tell he is struggling). Please help, as we have searched all the goldfish diseases and can't seem to find one that has all these symptoms?

Seems like you are doing everything right, by keeping the water clean and adding  salt and medication. Sometimes we just try our best and hope the fish can improve on its own.

Hello,

Thanks for the encouragement.

We started to treat him. We were changing his water (only 1/3 of it), putting in the drops for the infection into the water and then started to shut the filter down for a hour while the drops settled in and he ate.  We were also putting in salt.  He got better, his eyes cleared and his skin was better.  He also was back to being his old self!

So yesterday, we did a 50% water change and stopped with the drops and in the morning we were disappointed to see that his eye again has started to cloud.  What do we do? Keep him on the drops for the rest of his life?! We really don't want to do that.  Any suggestions on what is causing this? Thanks.

This is gonna hurt, but i believe that your fish is going to have to live with drops for his life. if this is a severe problem, remember that you hold a life in your hands -a life that, no matter if it is just a sick goldfish- is still a life that has trusted you to take care of it until its dying day. please do not give up on your fish.

Hello guys,

Thank you for your responses.

Looks like you all are right.  Every time we see that he is getting better and we take away the treatment, he gets sick again.

We now believe that he is our very precious (sick) fish.  We will do are best to keep him healthy, but we were also was wondering if anyone had advice/tips on how to care for a fish that is going to be sick for the rest of its life and if it is common to see this.  Every other week we see him go through a different symptom and recover from that symptom only to face a new one.  This week his tale has clamped and his is having difficulty swimming straight.

Thanks
