Eheim Quick Vac
« on: November 23, 2010, 02:52:22 AM »

Hi everybody,
just like to share what I ordered today at our fishguy while making arrangements for our first batch of babies to be taken and find another good home.

This Eheim Quickvac is battery driven, submersible. This means I can clean poop out as soon as its covering the gravel, in between waterchanges, without a hose hanging down the side and watching the bucket as well as the fishes.

I don't get it  Embarrassed Where does the water go if there is no buckets or hose? It sounds good by the way you are talking about it though  Wink Yiu should get it for free for giving them fishies!

Maybe the water gets sucked in and then pushed back out but the poop and other stuff gets caught inside it?  Undecided
But this sounds great. Sometimes I do water changes when not necessary just to clean out the poop!
Let us know how it goes when you get it.

I googled it, and I'm impressed that it is submersible. "Dirt particles are vacuumed up leaving gravel undisturbed thus not destroying the biological balance of your aquarium. Ultra-fine mesh traps dirt particles while returning clean water to the aquarium." I'm a newbie, so typically when I'm anywhere near my aquarium its biological balance is at risk.  Smiley

I think that would be great to use when your water chemistry is perfect and you wouldn't have to do a water change. Smiley
I think I'm going to buy one. Wink
Hanna, try it and tell us how you like it!! Wink

It is like trft said, the water only flows through that mesh canister and returns clean to the tank.

Of course it doesn't replace a waterchange, but it helps a lot to keep the gravel clean. Our fishguy showed it to us how it works, he uses it in his shop. I was amazed. Cheesy  Shocked  Cheesy

I won't get it for free, but with a nice discount, lol. It costs normally AU$ 99.--

That does sound great especially with what Minde said. I wouldn't mind having one myself, probably can't afford it at the moment Sad But we'll see, goldfish poop too much  Cheesy

The others poop plenty too, lol and they are as crazy as the goldies when it comes to feeding.
They also come to one corner when I only approach the tank and wiggle as good as my Aqua Puppies, lol

Another good thing is that you can vacuum the poop, water gets back into the tank, so you must not switch off the thermostat, filter, etc because of too low watelevel at some stage.

According to this I plan to poop-vacum every other day and keep up with regular waterchanges as usual. No mess anymore with the hose from the siphon watching fishes and the bucket at once....

It sounds like a good thing, but honestly... I can't see in what way one would need it! My tank does just great even if I change water only every second week. The gravel looks really nice and clean all the time Grin

Well, it is everybody's choice and likes or dislikes  Wink. I'vee seen it working at my fishguys store, my personal opinion: it is amazing, especially if you got MTS  Cheesy

As I mentioned before, it will free me from siphoning with the hose hanging into a bucket watching the bucket not to overflow and the fishes at the same time and the waterlevels. I can vacum clean it in between without draining water out. It will help with the water quality, having less decomposing matter in it.
My gravel looks clean too, but we know how much sh... is sucked up when we stirr it with the siphon.... Tongue

It is easy to handle without the hose hanging in your way.

So "hose-business" from now on only with the regular waterchanges  Grin

Abbie, post your experience please Smiley

I have to wait on mine too, it will be back in store by end of next week.... ALL sold out...

... and don't forget... you can line the waste-chamber with a layer of filter pad to keep the fine stuff in it as well... Wink

The water is filterd in the tank and goes right back to the tank.

We are from different "places" in goldfish land. My fish were very inexpensive. Everything else has cost plenty. I am obsessed with my goldfish, but now I really have to spend less and learn more. I am just glad I figured out how to make the siphon thing work.

This Eheim Quick Vac looks like a very useful tool. I think they did rename it because I see something also from Enheim called EHEIM Sludge Extractor and Gravel Cleaner. I just saw one at amazon.com being sold by cheaphumidors.com. There was only one for sell which with shipping would be just under $50. The comments on this item are telling. Suction seems to be a legit issue. I suppose you don't want to much and you don't want too little; would be nice if the next design has something to control that. Somebody on amazon commented about its use with sand.  Smiley  I wouldn't expect that would work to well.

Anyway, I'm outta here. Happy T-Day.

My gravel is very lightly coloured so the goldfish poop is very noticeable which is why I bought it Smiley
And lugging buckets of water when the water parameters are fine is annoying and time consuming.
I should get it today or tomorrow so I will post my experience then Smiley
****** are batteries not included....? what a rip lol.

Abbie: I can see your ******! Cheesy You know, there are settings on your profile where you can pick to have everything uncensored Wink And that suits me, my language and my life style better! EVERYTHING UNCENSORED FOR THE PEOPLEEEEEE!!!!! *fist in the air*
I got a bit sucked in here.

Hanna: That of course, it would prolly make water changes easier, BUT the thing about it for me, is that it's such a pain to lift the huge covering glasses of on my own, that I wouldn't want to do that more than necessary xD As in, once every second week and possibly in between for emergencies Wink Besides, I wouldn't have patience to empty 15 buckets out of the tank if I wasn't "entertained" by siphoning the gravel Wink lol.

Minde: I always have problems remembering batteries! For everything! I notice that I need some, but I forget to buy any for weeks and weeks. You know, you should probably write it down Wink

Nossie, this is understandable, I wouldn't enjoy lifting heavy glas covers either, and with one tank of course one thing\ks about it if it is needed. Wink

Our tank has sliding glass tops and the others a lid you can flip back and with 5 tanks ( MTS !!!, LOL ) all over the place, it's easier for me, hehe, I cannot wait to have it Grin

THE BLISS! I'm so jealous of you! xD But maybe it's easier when having many tanks? You just clean the gravel in all of them, and then you skip away to get the hose and empty 'em all c:

Ugh, we do not have a store right around the corner!!
We have a store in the next town about 1/2 hour away!!

Wah!! I will have to wait to use the gravel vac.
I guess I was so excited to find the gravel vac and buy it that I didn't even think of the batteries NOT coming with the dam n
thing! LOL! Cheesy

So I tried mine out today! It worked really well! Just as well as using your usual water siphon.
It even collects the really small particles which are underneath the gravel.
It is very easy to clean too! Just clip the mesh section out and rinse it under running water.
Mine did come with batteries btw Smiley lol
Luckily enough...because I forgot to buy some.

Wow, good to hear. I am still waiting on mine, our fishguy said yesterday they definetely will have them back in by next week... Geez, I cannot wait....

Already got batteries, LOL Grin

Really need it... carried millions of containers with water the last 3 days to battle the Ammonia spike I had in the tropical tank... my back is reminding me that I'm not a "spring chicken" anymore...

Haha yeah its really useful and it is definitely worth the wait Tongue
Batteries apparently last for 4 hours of use so I think I am going to buy some rechargeable ones so I don't have to keep buying more all the time.
Lol...yeah it is great now we won't have to lug as many containers of water! Smiley
If its not bad enough you have to carry the water away from the tank...but you also have to carry it back to it...I should really invest in a hose inside the house for filling the tank back up Smiley

Abbie, If you're going to do that why not just invest in the water changer?
Mine is an Aqueon and I LOVE it!! Changes water in a snap!!!
BTW I LOVE the gravel vac.  I use it when my nitrates are between 10-30.
Above 30-40 i do amajor water change! Grin

I have never heard of them before...I will look into it some more but from what I have been reading they sound awesome Smiley
I don't think they sell them in Australia though so I will have to buy one from overseas.
Is the water pressure as high as when using a normal siphon?

Well since it hooks up to your sink, I guess it depends on what your water pressure is?
I don't know but mine has better suction, and is more powerful than just a regular siphon!
Look on ebay.  Sometimes you can even find a used one. Smiley
