Personality change
« on: February 26, 2012, 06:11:22 PM »

Ok so Flash and Merle have been getting in fine for weeks now and we have had no problems (behaviour wise) then all of a sudden tonight I have notice that Flash keeps shoving Merle out of the way and seems to be protective of one corner of the tank! I am not sure what gender they are and there is an algea wafer there but I have never seen Falsh do this before, they normally get on fine and share food! I mean it isn't like Flash is attacking Merle he just literally keeps shoving him out the way! If anyboy has any ideas as to why Flash has started doing his or what I could do about it, it would be greatly appreciated!

Forgot to mention it is a 25 litre tank, I know it is small, I am saving to get a new one at the end of the year. Tested the water everything is fine. Tonight I placed one snail and one butterfly pleco back into the main tank, as they had web in te quarantine tank whilst I treated the main one for ich.

I have occasionally seen Palo act this way at feeding time, especially when it's gel food (his favorite). I usually just offer them a bit more. He never hurts anyone and only does it rarely so I don't worry about it.

I decided I would try taking Brian out of the tank just to see what happened, as soon as I did that he calmed down a bit! So I don't really know what it was all about!  Undecided

Even though the water quality is good he might feel crowded. Adding new guys might have upset him? Hmm no other ideas.

Yeah I did wonder that but they were all in the main tank roughly 3 weeks ago and there was 2 apple snails, 2 fish and 2 plecos then! He could have grown slightly since then and felt crowded with it! Although I think Roger has grown a little so that might make a difference! Hmmm! It has just really confused me as they were fine all together a few weeks ago!
I always seem to et crazy animals! Lol!

They have started up again! It is like they have to be together and don't leave each others side but as soon as food is introduced they start fighting! Any ideas on what I can do?

Maybe you could start hand feeding them and see if that helps?

Yeah thanks skwisee I though of that but they won't eat out of my hand. Since posting that last message, I decided I would try feeding them twice a day and give them a bit more than I used to! I know that's dangerous as it can produce more waste but I have snails who eat what they don't and I thought to combat the waste problem I would test the water everyday and anything unusually in the results I will do a water change. I am worried about that side of it but they are getting on better since I started this. What do you think?

The goldfish won't immediately feed from your hand it takes a while to get them used to the idea.

The way I went about it was to hold some flakes in between my fingers and dip them in the water. I would hold them there for a while as the flakes soaked and became wet, and eventually they'd fall out of my fingers and the fish would eat it.
Eventually Lucky would come closer and closer to my hand as she associated fingers with food and after a few days of this she was happily nibbling from my fingers, in fact now she nibbles my fingers checking for food when ever I'm doing things in the tank Cheesy

With feeding extra food, if it helps, then that's good, but I would agree with testing the water more often whilst doing this, just in case  Smiley
