when the water in the fish tank turns green, what does it mean and how do you know when the fish is laying eggs

You've got algae Cheesy Where is your tank positioned in the room and how long do you have lights on for? Tanks placed near windows and exposed to direct sunlight may have algae problems or if you leave the tank lights on for too long this may also happen. Algae is natural though and a good sign you have a healthy tank, but it can be annoying and ugly. If you buy some plants they will fight with the algae for nutrients, meaning some of it may die off. Max. B posted a great article about algae in the aquarium decoration part of this forum.

You'll see the eggs and your fish should show signs of mating behaviour such as nudging. But I don't know much about this so hopefully someone else can help you out  Undecided

When you have an algae bloom sometimes that is referred to as "green water", like Andrea said.
This is a good sign that your tank is healthy.  Algae is not all bad, here are some good things about algae!
Fish eat it and it is good for their digestion, algae will absorb nitrates in the tank.
It is unsightly but you can use a scraper, algae magnet, or soft pad made for aquariums and wipe the front of the glass so you can at least see your fish! Wink
As far as eggs, they are tiny!  They are about the size of pin heads, clear white in color.  A female goldfish will lay these eggs but you will have to have a male goldfish in the tank to fertilize them for them to hatch and babies to appear. Smiley

the light is on the whole night till morning and switch it off during the day. The 10l gallon tank has 4 small gold fish and its far from the window or any other direct light. I have 3 female and 1 male in the tank .

I also have a bit of an algae problem though I only have my lights for about 10 hours and it does not get any direct sunlight. Mine is easy to wipe off, but I think it also doesn't take much for algae to grow. How bad is yours? I know there is some tablet things that are meant to stop algae from growing bit I don't know how safe these are. Also if you use any liquid fertiliser in the tank, stop, it is known for feeding algae.

Also your tank is too small for four goldfish Sad I know they are small now but goldfish grow like crazy and produce alot of waste no matter how small. Goldfish need 10 gallons per fish, hopefully you are in a position that soon you will be able to get a bigger tank Smiley You could find a very cheap 40 gallon on ebay, craiglist, charity shops and then save some money for a really good filter, unless you already have one Smiley

thanks on the tank size issue, i will look around for it. The water looks green especially during the day when i switch off the light but you can easily see through the fish although i am not sure on how bad can it go from now since it has been 3 days since the water colour changed.

Algae will grow especially much if you have high nitrates. So please answer Minde's questions.
Do you have a test kit for pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

This is my third week since i bought the fish so am planning to change the water at least once a month (this week) and i do not have a pH test kit yet

Don't bother wasting your money on a ph test kit, as long as your ph is stable your fish will most likely be fine as goldfish aren't ph specific. It would be better to save your money for a master test kit which includes ph but also have ammonia, nitrites and nitrates testers. So when you have some money please buy one, they are worth it and last a long time Smiley For now could you go down to the local pet shop and get your water tested? This is very important and they normally do it for free.

Also it is best to do a water change every week especially in your case as your tank is much too small for three goldfish. You normally do a water change depending on the results of the test. You may have to do two 50% water changes a week to keep your water quality non-toxic.

All the parameters I mentioned are important, so don't think you can get away by just getting yourself a pH-kit and saying that "MY PH IS FINE! Cheesy" when your fish clearly are not, since pH isn't the thing that will be hurting them the most.

Do please go on the lookout for a larger tank, or give three of your fish away Smiley
