White spots (they look like pimples) on forehead? Normal or what is it?

This is in reference to my same 6 inch (without fins) silver fantail goldfish. He gets these white bumps on his forehead (they look like pimples) that actually have tissue or something coming out of them, it looks like little worms, but i don't believe they actually are. Is this a sign of his gender like the white dots on the fins and gill plates or something completely different?

I think those white pimples you are referring to are how the wen or head growth is formed.  The wen continues to grow throughout the life of the fish and during these growth stages white "pimples" will appear about the head of the fish. These white pimples form the head growth when they actually burst open or bloom so to speak.

Fantails don't have wens.  I have two fantails and neither of them have ever had pimple-type things on their heads at all.  Wen growth iswhite and it occurs between the lines of the wen and as occasional spots, almost looks like ich, on the wen and sometimes the face, especially on fish like lionheads and ranchus.

Well, the picture of his fish looks like it has a wen and is not of a fantail so that is what I went by.

If that is the fish that the OP is talking about, then yes, you are right, as it does have a wen.  However, she said fantail, so I thought she was talking about a different fish from the one in her avatar.

well, it could be a sign of gender or wen growth, as mentioned before. It may not be a fantail as initially suspected. fish are weird that way. sometimes they dont all develop at the same rate. AND NO. ROCK SALTS WON'T WORK.

fantails dont have a wen.. and the gender indication u can see a white spot in the operculum (gills protection) and in the fin... do you have a pic? so we can determine  better... happy fish keeping.

wait wait wait wait wait... Hold up here... It could be a parasite too... I'm almost certain there was an article on here that had to do with worms and pimples... Hold on, Ill check it out

Here: It could also possible be Hole-in-the-head disease.  Without a pic I'm uncertain but:

Hole in the Head Disease


This disease often starts as small sores on the head around the eye area. These sores than later develop into tubular eruptions that has a yellow or cream-colored mucus. One of the causes of this disease is thought to be poor water quality, so it is important to perform regular water changes.

Ok, guyz...listen up!!
HIS FISH IS NOT A FANTAIL BUT A LEMON HEAD ORANDA.   PIMPLES ARE AN INDICATION OF THE WEN FORMING....THEY ARE OFTEN MISTAKEN FOR A FUNGUS OR DISEASE AND MISTREATED!!
sorry I couldn't take it any more!!!
Bobbi has these small pimples all the time....at first I thought something was wrong so I read up on orandas and it's very normal.  The wen also can look like a whitish mucus is covering it as it goes through development.

My fantail has the same stuff. He appears to be ok, its been going on for 1 and a half months without any deaths.I hope this helps.

Well how do you tell the difference between fungus and these wen development growths? Cuz Tiger got a white thingy on his head, and I couldve sworn it looked cottony, liike fungus. :S

well the pustules or pimples on the wen growth are not fuzzy.
My new fish has 2 right now that are the normal head growth whitish bumps.
In a few days they will disappear and then they wil become part of the wen.  Bobbi got these all the time.
I guess if you think its a fungus then treat with pimafix...it won't hurt your fish but if you want to wait a day or so you could see if they disappear.

Hi guys, this is a bit confusing to me cuz i observed this worm-like growth on my one year old oranda's wen recently [about a week ago]. He lives in a pond. Today i got home to find him belly-up Cry. I hope he really was'nt suffering when i assumed he was fine. I've had many orandas but i've never observed anything like that. I hesitate to believe it was just wen growth. If you have the means then I suggest microscopy just to be sure.

Well, I have never seen worm like growths on any of my orandas so maybe your fish had a parasite of some kind.
What I have seen on my orandas as their wen develops is white pustules or pimples like "whiteheads" which burst after 3-4 days and become fibrous material that makes up the wen.  Thor had 2 large ones on the side of his head, one in the back of his wen and a few in the front which all burst and became orange red colored tissue and just blended into the wen.  If you think your fish is suffering from something else, maybe posting a picture of your fish on here for others to see and maybe someone could help diagnose if they have seen the problem before.
