New fish old fish
« on: January 18, 2012, 08:56:36 PM »

So I am a newbie, I have had one or two goldfish at a time over the last few years, usually fair rescues. I decided to get my fish a friend, but he's being hostile. I read the other posts about this but I have two tiny fish in a fourty gallon tank so I don't think it's over territory. Also I didn't notice any signs of spawning. Is there anything else that would cause this? Will it kill my new fish? (ps I added a hiding spot so he could get away)

It can still be territory. I had this exact same problem in my big 125 with only a few small fish. If you have a second tank remove the aggressive fish for a day or two, rearrange the tank then put him back. Mine continued to be aggressive after this though and I had to divide the tank with "egg crate". Go see "Problem with Brand New Tank" on the Illness page, the second or third page will show how to divide the tank. Good luck! My fantails did real damage to an oranda and I am planning on separating them permanently.

Oh, by the way, if they are Common, Comet or similarly shaped goldfish then please don't get any more. These type goldfish need more space than fancies and may grow very large. Two in forty gallons is the max. You may already know this but I had to say it.  Smiley

I don't know much about snails but a lot of people keep them with goldfish. Nossie does so it must be ok Smiley If you've had it awhile and it hasn't overpopulated your tank then you're probably safe. Out of curiosity- what kind of plants do you have? I only recently started keeping live plants. Only my java ferns and Anubis are doing well. Everything else died or was eaten. Lol.

Like I said I'm totally a newbie,  I can tell you I halve a dark variety of Anubias (what specifically I'm unsure) I also have a little java moss (which I hear gets destroyed during spawning, but that has never been an issue before since he was solo. )and hornwort which I really like because even if Fareed pulls it up, it's cool because they are okay to float around for a bit

Hm, haven't tried hornwort. The pet stores near me don't have a lot of plant variety. So is he (she?) still chasing the other? Hopefully it'll just take some time. Fareed? That's an interesting name...what's the other one called?

I am very lucky to have a great little family owned place near me. They are wonderful. My new guy is Ishmael, I like to think I'm being an equal opportunity goldfish mom!

Lol. That's very cute. I'm jealous of your petstore. I am making due with Petsmart unless I drive into Dallas.

Hello, Danni! Smiley

Do you have any idea what kind of snail it is you have? If it's kind of big, it's probably an Apple snail, I really like them, only problem I've had is that they leave kind of unsightly slime trails on the glass Tongue

I agree with cheri on the method to deal with your fish Smiley If you will ever need to separate just for a short time later, you may want a cheap plastic basket that you can just hang over the edge of the tank and place the hostile fish in it. I had to separate one of my more zealous males this way while the breeding season was ongoing Wink Just make sure the basket doesn't have any sharp edges.

Best of luck! Smiley Fish can change their minds pretty suddenly, I had one that was being hostile for at least two days after being separated multiple times, then I decided to take him to the pet shop, but couldn't (after putting him into a bag of tank water) and when I put him back after that he was very nice Smiley

So I wanted to thank you for your help! I put Fareed in solitary confinement today while I was at work, came home, reintroduced them and now they are just fine. In fact it almost looks like they are dancing, it's wonderful. Thanks a million!
