What kind of fish is this?

Hi I was wondering whether or not this fish is a fantail. He was labeled as one at walmart but we all know how dependable that is.

It's probably a fantail!
But funny enough, the tail and the back have a very Ranchu-like shape! But I'm pretty sure that's just a coincidence
It's a very beautiful fish
I like the color

It is a lovely fish, very pretty colour too.
Might be a Ranchu-Fantail interbreed

Hanna: I've seen some adorable hybrids between Oranda and Ryukin, they look so round
And also, Ranchu and Ryukin, they were like balls with tiny fins! <3 But I find it hard to believe that a hybrid would be available in a pet shop... but then again, you never know

Yeah, especially after the experience we all had so far, that pet shop staff especially in those big chains don't know really much....

He does look rather ranchu-ish doesn't he? I've always thought he was one of the most beautiful fish I've ever seen. However his personality was other than beautiful lol unfortunately he tried to either bully or breed with my red cap oranda who is like an inch long. Poor guy ended up having to be taken back to the store I was so upset! Anywho I had always wondered. Funny thing was at that same store yesterday I scored. I'd never before seen ranchus at walmart and the breed had frankly always been unavailable to me...however, they had a collection of them labled as "shubunkins" (of course they weren't, anyone hwo knows anything about fish could tell you that) but I ended up taking home a 1/2 inch baby named Gold Dust. Not sure if the name is perminant but hey maybe I could get some suggestions I shall post a pic.

That's so cute! And I think Gold Dust is a perfect name
I really like it!
I'd say, judging from his tail and back, he almost HAS to be a mix between fantail and Ranchu! I don't think there's any other way... besides, a pure breed fantail has much bigger tail and straighter back, like you know

I am new at this, but looks like a young blue oranda to me. I have one that is a little larger but not old enough yet for his wen to start growing and it looks alot like mine.

Could be....actually it is called spawning. Goldfish are egg layers. You may have 2 males tho or 2 females or 1 of each.
watch for tiny eggs on the plants. If your goldfish do spawn you might want to remove the eggs if they are fertilzed.
Goldfish of the same gender do participate in spawning activity tho.

@rcookenc: I agree with you it's an oranda, very similar to my big oranda.

But orandas usually have rather long tails. It's at least one of the criteria of their variety that they should have tails close to fringe tails or butterfly tails.

Saw a tank labelled Oranda's at the pet shop I hate the other day. Out of 6 fish two were Oranda's, 1 was a fantail and three were Ranchu's
Great job there

Lol d: Maybe they stopped caring about placing the goldfish in correctly labeled tanks? Around here they have them labeled simply "Goldfish" and sometimes according to color, so that moors would have a different price c:

A lionhead doesn't have a dorsal fin, and it has a straight back compared to a ranchu. It's simply used wrongly on orandas and ranchus, among other fish that have a wen. (just like "moor" is usually used to refer to telescope goldfish that aren't black.)
