Algae/Green Water Problems in Koi Ponds?

What's the best thing to rid Koi and goldfish ponds of algae and the muck on the bottom of the ponds? What's good to keep the oxygen levels up?
or Any other suggestions for someone who has inherited these fish ponds.

pond owners swear by UV pond filters to help get rid of algae blooms. these blooms are caused by excess nutrients and sunlight. does the pond have a regular filter at the moment? water movement and filtration will also help.

cold temperture

I have three fish in a 60 gallon pond One is a common goldfish and the other 2 are shubunkins.My question is the temperture has dropped it is 18degrees out and there is ice on the pound do I need to bring my fish inside the are very small? I worried about my fish

fish can survive in freezing temperatures as long as oxygen can reaach them.
Their level of activity should seem deathlike. If you are concerned for their well-being, then do bring them inside, but make sure to acclimate them to the new water first. Hope this helps  Wink

Algae needs light and nutrients to grow. Chances are that if you have algae in your pond, you have an excess of both of these things. Put some water lilies in the pond, in the sunniest spots. The lily pads will cover part of the surface, so they won't allow too much sun to reach the water. They will also use up a lot of the excess nutrients, competing with the algae for food. Lilies are stronger than algae, so they'll win the nutrient battle and slowly but surely chase out the algae.

something as simple as a few oxygenating plants should do the trick! Both for algae and for the oxygen levels. For example Elodea (Canadian Pondweed), Hornwort or Willow moss. Then different kinds of lilies would also help (:
In case you don't feel like putting too many plants there you could always keep an airpump and a few airstones handy Cheesy
