I saw an axolotl once before in a pet store, I believe it was being donated to a public place (I forget if it was an aquarium or wildlife park), but it was adorable! I've only heard about them recently though and researched them a little out of curiosity If I were to have one, I'd want a custom tank, as they don't need a lot of depth, but I imagine would prefer shallow, longer tanks... I'd make an entire slice of a river for it to live in with some kind of sponge filter... Although whilst reading up about them, it mentions if temperature gets above 23/24 degrees celsius, it causes problems, so I'm not sure how you could go about keeping the temperature that low, especially in summer months? As for the water, I have read you can use distilled water, but I'm sure there must be some kind of conditioner for tap water out there for them? They are fascinating though, I was considering having one in the 3 foot tank when Lucky has her pond, but I'm not sure, I'd rather provide a longer tank for one if I could!

Okay, the moment I read 'many trickles' I instantly thought WATERFALL!!!! Not a massive waterfall of course, but imagine a long thin tank, looking like a slice of river, with water from the filter output, pouring gently down a little waterfall back into the tank.... you know something like this at one end of the tank; ( Link is not visible to guests. You could always make one by hand, so it was a gentle enough slope to not make too much current

Looking on care sheets, it is warned that a tight fitting lid is needed as they can try to escape anyway and if they succeed and aren't found in time, then yes they'll die. ( Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)

In fact wikihow mentions a mesh lid, that could be quite nice and would allow you to have moss growing over the top.... oh and it would allow plants in the bog/land area to grow nice and tall out of the tank

In fact this is quite an interesting FAQ section I just found on axolotls with lots of different questions answered ( Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)
The whole site is just full of information, in case you hadn't seen it before Hmm I wonder why they escape from aquaria... perhaps they just really like to explore? Oh, oh also it does say this on the FAQ; "You could keep 2 adults in a 10 US gallon / 37 litre aquarium with no problems." Maybe I could have one after all It also has interesting methods on keeping the water cool, it says to use water frozen in a plastic bottle. Simply float the ice bottle in the tank and voila water cools
