Babies!!
« on: June 02, 2012, 05:51:59 PM »

My variatus platy has started giving birth today. She has had 17 so far and mother and babies are doing well. I have some liquifry for them and they are in a breeding net. Does anyone have any more advice for looking after these adorable little guys?

So cool.  Are they hard to care for?

How big are they?

I use to feed my platy fry with some soaked tubifex, the smallest dusty pieces in the bottom of the jar. Mix those in a small cup of tank water and they can eat it pretty easily Smiley Tubifex is really nutritious and good for growing fish.
I don't really do anything otherwise, they take pretty good care of themselves!

I have some liquifry specifically designed for the fry of live bearers they seem be doing pretty well on it so far. They are really small and so cute. They love to swim around. I think there are about 20 of them, I tried to have another count today but they keep hiding. Smiley

How long before it is safe to clean the tank? As a couple of them are actually in the 28litre the rest are in the breeding basket when I first noticed she had given birth I was cleaning the tank and sucked 4 of them up all though I saved ten from the bucket and the are fine I don't want to do that again.

You just have to be careful... Smiley I change water in my platy tank once every two weeks or once a month depending on the water quality when there are babies around, just to do it a bit less often and let them grow a little more in between!

Well I did it on the second which was the day they were born so they should be ok for a little while longer. They aren't staying at the bottom of the tank any more they swim closer to the top now. I love all of them so much but I don't have the room to keep all of them really. So I have promised myself that I will keep two male and three female when they are bigger and I know a somewhere that will take the others when they are 2 months old. They specialise in just fish so I know they will be ok.

Yeh they are all ready separated. Victor is in the 28 with the fry and Ligan is in the 60 litre now as it was empty after I moved Merle in with flash. I am going to get another female to go in there with her while the fry grow up then I will put three of the female fry in with them when they are big enough keep two males in with victor and take the rest to a shop. I may give two of them to a girl I babysit for though if she will do a trade with me, as she has a 28 litre with two common and a shubunkin in. I am thinking of asking her to trade then find another home for the commons and keep the shubunkin myself. I will see what happens.

I assume that you've given her the standard lecture on single-tailed goldfish Grin

I know. She is a good kid.
Update: babies are doing well I am starting to notice that some of them are tuxedo's one defiantly is and she seems to be developing at a greater rate than the others. Her tail is already black and she is slightly larger than the others but not overly so. She looks like a she at the moment as she has an anal fin and not a rod but then they all seem to (so I don't know if that develops later) but right now I refer to her as a female and I call her my black beauty. I just love to sit and watch the little guys they make me smile every time. I will try and put some pics up tomorrow I just haven't had time to post them yet.
Serious question though how many platy's can I comfortably fit in a 28 litre and how many in a 60 litre? I kinda want to keep them all but if it is just not possible I don't want to cramp them as it wouldn't be fair on them. I don't want to hurt them by having to many in an unsuitable tank but I just know that it will be hard to give them up if I could keep them. I also have to consider the two adults I already have. Just want to know now how many I can realistically keep.

Platies can be stocked according to the one gallon/inch rule.

I'm really not sure how many litres are in a gallon.  Undecided also is that us gallons or British gallons?

That would work out as 7 in the 28 litre and 12 in the 60 litre. I will have to see when they get bigger.

Oh, thought you counted with gallons, in liters it's two liters/cm of fish body, platies will generally be 4-5cm long, so each fish needs 10 liters. In the 28, you could keep 2-3 fish and in the 60 you could have 6 of them.

Well I bought another female today as Logan was on her own in the 60 litre tank and I know platy's dont like to be on their own ( and aren't supposed to be) and as seen as it is going to be at least a month before they are big enough to see properly to catch I thought I would buy her a friend. I made sure she was a female and she is really pretty. We called her Scarlett.  Grin
