Its fungus, and they probably got it because the fish people Walmart buys from are st*pid and dont care for their fish. or the fish staff at walmart are st*pid.

Sonorus was a Walmart fish, only they dont sell fish anymore..

walmart  is bad for fish one of the problems is there is only one filter for all the tanks. so if 1 fish gets sick it can spread to the whole system petco has the same system that is why u get the same thing happening there but aleast at petco they know more about the fish and will treat them if needed and tell u if there was a sickness if u ask.

what really pisses me off at walmart is they will sell gps (green spotted puffers really cool fish) and give people the wrong information about them like they are safe with other fish and snails. gps will eat anything that they can they love snails crack the shell and eat whats inside they mostly eat meat

yet still that is not the worse thing GPS are brackish to marine fish they will only live in fresh for about a year.

so not only will a kid buy the fish and it will kill EVERYTHING in his tank. but after a year they will die with out salt. so there will be no fish left. everyone should write letters to wallmart and tell them how cruel they are to theses fish i have dont blame the kid working that alse he doesnt know better he was not taught

I wouldn't blame the shop as much as the general public. People don't bother learning about fish and taking care of them because they think that fish are cheap, and can easily be replaced by anything. And so, most people that go to pet shops are completely relying on the bad advice from the staff. Not to mention that I don't know anyone that bothered checking for any special requirements of the fish or which other species they're compatible with, nothing about environments and so on... I could complain for ages.

Anyway, the fish had fungus, and were probably either constipated or floating around because of too high nitrates in the water. Poor things...

Basically it doesn't matter where you get your fish from, AS LONG AS PEOPLE THERE REALLY CARE AND ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE how to keep the fish they are selling HAPPY AND HEALTHY.

I mentioned it in other posts, if you decide to buy a fish, go from pet shop to petshop in yout area. Have a look how clean it is, especially try to glance behind the scenery, have a GOOD and CLOSE look at the tanks and at the fishes behaviour.
Ask questions you know that they should know how to answer.

We do have min 5 pet shops with fish department in our local area, BUT ONLY OF 2 (!!!) we'll buy our fish and plants from. The other ones are good for the "hardware" only.... not for fish, live plants or knowledge....

Both the pet stores around here are rather fresh and nice, and their fish are usually healthy And there was that one time when we were about to buy some cat fish, but they didn't want to sell them because they were having ich in that tank atm... I guess they are actually treating their sick fish too

Isn't that a good thing? I mean, medicines or food don't need to be quarantined before they're sold, and they don't get sick!

You know already that the best thing to do when you've got new fish is to quarantine them for at least 2 weeks? ;> That way, specimens that look healthy have time to be treated against parasites or any possible infections without having to give it to the rest of your fish first
