How much room does a Betta need?  I heard they like small spaces to hide from predators and if the space is too big they get scared.

You can keep a betta in almost any size container from 1 quart size to a huge community tank set-up.
The main thing is if you decide to go small is that you do not overfeed and do water changes on a very regular basis. Smiley

I did not know this. My betta is afraid of big big places, so I guess frequent waterchanges for me! What do you figure.. once a week?

Seriously tho, drop in pieces of food, 1 at a time and when your betta stops eating then that is what you feed a day and once a day only!!  Usually mine eat 4-5 pieces a day.  You want your betta to eat all that you give him.  Any left over food will greatly foul such a small container very quickly!!!! Smiley

lol so far hes eaten two in a sitting. im slowly working my way up, see what his limit is. Smiley and I dont feed that much anymore! lol

We have had several bettas throughout the years and my (and I think their) favorite container has been a coffee pot. I am a pack rat and keep the pots when I discard the machines. They are the perfect size for some pretty gravel and a small decoration and has the added bonus of a lid to keep the kitty out!

Gosh, I usually end up breaking the pot and then have to try and order/find another one for the machine. Wink
My favorite is a  huge brandy sniffer.  I broke my other one but found even a bigger one for just $2.
I have white stones with a few sea shells in there with a vintage pagoda and then a lucky bamboo and of course a red betta. Cheesy

betta's will thrive in any space smallest i would go is a one gallon with very careful care. Most suggest a 3 gallon minimum with a filter heater and everything. with bettas you have to be very careful though as they can thrive in a big tank but need a filter with a slow flow because they are from calm waters and with those big fins they have trouble swimming. Also if you get a 5 or ten gallon well planted and keep the temperature around 78 Fahrenheit they will THRIVE.
