HELP!!!
« on: December 09, 2010, 06:31:32 PM »

Hey all! URGENT: Batal looks really sick. I'll try to get pictures up over the weekend, but I'll tell you guys the symptoms.

So basically Batal is lying at the bottom corner of the tank. His breathing is really ragged, and every time he inhales he sort of spasms a little. He also has a 1 cm tear in his right fin, and some of his tail fins are ragged. I don't know the cause of this, and some of the other goldies have this too. But the rest of them are fine, swimming happily. For the fins I am adding a LifeGuard treatment.

What can I do? I'm really worried. He doesn't look too good. He snaps out of it every once in a while and he eats, but I really don't know what's going on??? HELP!

OH - And also, I checked the water parameters. Everything is in ship-shape (low nitrates, etc.)

Sounds like a bacterial infection...he doesn't sound good with the breathing like that.
If all of them are displaying ragged fins, then that is probably fin rot and will have to be treated with a good antibiotic orally and in the water too. Smiley

Ok, thanks Minde! I'll be adding some more anti-bacterial tablets today and I really hope he gets better  Smiley I also read somewhere that ragged breathing and spasms can be caused from Nitrate poisoning, but the nitrates aren't high. Huh Anyway I'll be changing the water after the medication period is over, to eliminate any major nitrates and stuff.

When was the last time you did a water change? I think it is always a good idea to do a water change before treating. Aswell as anti-bacterial tablets, I would also treat with melafix for the fin rot.

Hope everything turns out ok Smiley These **** bacterial infections when water quality is fine (I'm going through the same thing but different symptoms)  Angry

It could either be an infection as Minde said, or he might have gotten stuck and hurt somewhere in the tank, somehow.
But I'd treat him against bacterial infections either way, since that would generally be the smartest way to treat Smiley

Hope he'll perk up! Smiley

Please do a waterchange ( 50% ) BEFORE you start treating.
How high are the Nitrates?

Thanks guys!

Hanna: hehe.... about that 50% water change before the treatment, I already started it......  Undecided But I promise, cross my heart, I will do it the day after the treatment is done.... Monday.

Nossie: Thanks. Batal is looking a little more chipper actually! He still goes down to the bottom corner of the tank, but he is eating and playing around with the others.

Andrea: The last water change I did was about 1 and a half weeks ago.

Quick Q to you all: Can a fish have epilepsy? It's probably way too soon and stuff to tell, and I don't want to jump to conclusions, but if it's possible for a fish to have epilepsy, might Batal have it? He sort of jerks a little when he breathes and has those little "spasms" and then he jolts up when I move closer to him.

when was the last time you checked your water parameters?
what are the exact numbers?
Please post them here! Thanx! Smiley
If you haven't changed your water in a week in a half then you certainly shouldn't be dumping any chemicals into the tank until you have and know how much of a water change to do!!!
The other thing...you should ALWAYS  do a water change, at least 30% BEFORE you start treatment of any sort!!!

awww, shucks. I really hate it when you start a treatment, THEN you ask for help, and find out you did something wrong.  Undecided

Well, OrandaLover, regard it as a process of learning...
I only hope that Batal will be fine, same with your other fishies.

Can you please post the exact numbers of your test results? This will be much appreciated. THX.

Other than that I believe that watechanges should be done on a regular basis,  once a week... just compare it with opening the windows in your home to let fresh air in.

Oranda Lover, You should know this by now...we went over it before.
You also know that you have a somewhat crowded environment for your fishes so this should be common sense! Smiley

Do you have an ammonia test?
I hope Batal will be ok too...your numbers look fine.
Maybe he is just tired from doing tricks! Cheesy

I just wanted to ask about Ammonia, as this one is the first in the Nitrogen cycle. There may be a spike.

You do use waterconditioner and beneficial bacteria ?

Also, OrandaLover, please don't get crook at me, I only want to point it out to you: I think priority now is to get that environment right your fishies live in before thinking about teaching them tricks. This is exhausting for your fish.
I also believe they should behave like fish normally do... in their normal life they don't do tricks and my honest opinion about those videoclips available on the net about so called "trained goldfish" to do what a human likes them to do is cruel.  Sad

IMO our fish should live as natural as possible: Good tank with enough room, plants, good aeration, godd filtration to keep the water healthy, top notch water parameters. REGULAR tests and waterchanges.

We ARE responsible for those little critters we adopted.  Wink

Just to add, I don't know if fish can get epilepsy, I don't see why they couldn't. However, it does not sound like epilepsy at all. My dog actually has it and the attacks/episodes/whatever you call them are quite different to what you are explaining  Wink

Once again hope everything works out Smiley As Hanna said environment is they key I think.

Hanna: It's the same as dogs. If you do it right, the goldfish will actually enjoy their new tricks Smiley But I'd say that BEFORE trying to teach the fish ANYTHING, one should be a bit more experienced with them. (The best way is also keeping the training fish in a separate tank.)

OrandaLover: Remember to change the water regularly after this. IT IS NEEDED.

Ok guys!

Hanna: yes, I do use water conditioner and beneficial bacteria. I'll concentrate on getting the tank being good for the fish BEFORE I do the tricks. But I do agree with Nossie that tricks can be fun for goldfish. Just like dogs and birds!

Andrea: ok, thanks Andrea, then that basically rules out epilepsy.

Nossie: Yes, I will change the water regularly. mind, I had been changing the water every saturday for the past couple weeks except for this last time.  Smiley
