Bit worried about my Pearlscale. Any advice?
« on: July 05, 2010, 06:50:37 AM »

I bought my Pearlscale goldfish about 10 months ago. This was my first mistake - it was in a small tank full of young Pearlscales and many of them looked deformed. They has funny shaped backs, odd looking fins, bodies that were too long, eyes different sizes etc. As I did not know much about goldfish at the time, I did not think anything of it. I then kept the Pearlscale in an unsuitable environment for 10 months. It hardly grew at all in this time. In the last few days I have done something about it, and now I have 3 fancy goldfish in a 30 Gallon aquarium with external filter rated for 60 Gallons, live plants in the aquarium etc. My question is whether I have damaged it permanently by keeping it in a crowded tank for 10 months, and whether it is also likely to be too small or deformed because of where I bought it? It is still only 1'' long (excluding tail). It currently has no health problems and I feed my goldfish a varied diet of pellets, peas and live/frozen foods. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks Smiley

Here is a picture of him:
sorry for the poor quality but he won't stay still! Roll Eyes

I know there is a term for this but I can't remember it at the moment and I just know that some dodgy pet shops do try to sell fish like that but they are best avoided. However, what do you mean unsuitable environment? Was it incredibly unsuitable? It sounds like it is leading a pretty good life now and the fact that it has no health problems sounds even better. I imagine just really keep up with giving it the nutrients it needs and keeping a close eye on your water quality as it may be ok but it might be a bit weakened from a not so good start of life.
He's a cutey Smiley And most of the pearlscales I've seen a shaped like that, but I don't know too much about them.

Well I had it with common/comet goldfish in quite a small tank, so it did miss out on food sometimes because of the faster moving fish in the tank, and the other fish were bigger than him so they could have stressed him.

But yeah I think I will just keep an eye on things and do the best that I can for him Smiley I'm hoping he will grow a bit and not stay really small for the rest of his life. Smiley

Maybe he's just meant to be small like some people Smiley

I think he'll be fine Smiley He's a really beautiful fish Smiley But it's true that goldfish that have been raised on poor nutrition or in too crowded/small containers will stay quite small.
Although, since you've got a proper setup now, you should just be patient, and happy that this little fish is healthy Smiley Nothing to worry about! Cheesy

Good Cheesy

I have now got a 53 Gallon tank arriving on Friday and I shall hopefully be getting some Ranchus. I might move the little pearlscale into it and then he will have even more space Smiley

Well I shall post some photos of my new tank on here when I get it set up Smiley

I have already noticed that my Pearlscale is much happier now and all three of my goldfish are swimming round the tank much more and looking more settled Smiley

Yes, please share some pics with us. I just can see how much happier your fish are since I had the experience with ours when we moved them over a few days ago to the 150 l one

Ok I shall post some pictures of my 3 goldfish tomorrow Smiley I have seen the pictures of your new tank and it looks amazing. You have some lovely goldfish. Smiley I don't think my current tank or even my new tank would really be big enough to comfortably keep comets/common goldfish in so I will be sticking with Fancy ones. I'm hoping to get some Ranchus for my new tank Grin

I love fancy, eggshaped goldfish Smiley And some day, I'd be so happy to have some colorful telescopes or pearl scales! Cheesy
But I haven't seen anything else than black moors and fantails xD Somehow I did find two Orandas and a Pompom though!

Post pictures once you'll have your new fish Smiley
