Your fish obviously need help. But I do not believe they will receive the help they need until the owners learn to respect all life. Fish are pets just like any other and depend on you for everything they need. If you don't want to put the time and effort into keeping your pets healthy and happy, then you should rethink being an owner. Keeping fish is not a cheap hobby nor is keeping any other pet. Most of the people giving you advice on this site would probably agree. If you want to keep healthy and happy fish, then you need to learn everything you can about the subject. I do not mean to bash but simply to inform.

to the last poster: water has been tested every time by the pet store and they said it is ok - as i don't trust them I am waiting to receive my own test kit - read the whole thread pls. If you don't want to put the time and effort into keeping your pets healthy and happy, then you should rethink being an owner.
I agree with you however if you read my posting the fishes are not mine and i am not their owner but i am helping my partner trying to figure this out and yes you did sound harsh. the new fishes are doing fine and all living happily. there is a part of me that agrees with my hubby that the fishes did arrive diseased/hurt/unwell form the pet shop (the new ones are from a different shop) on a diff note i do moderate a couple of forums and i know it is hard not to, but newbies come to sites like this to get help and supported in the new skill gathering (in this case) so don't make them feel bad. i don't particularly even like fishes but like even less to see them dying for no reason, so I am trying to do something right, the last message initial reaction was to just loose the bookmark to this forum - so be gentle with us newbies

And FLASH...HOW DARE YOU blame your partner/b/f/husband or whatever!!! SHAME on you for not letting your common sense take over! You DID NOT HAVE to buy those fish!! If your partner/b/f/husband wanted them then let him go out and get them himself. If you had time to buy more fish then you had time to buy a test kit. You need to get your priorities straight and take care of your sick fish and get that aquarium at pristime water chemisty levels with all healthy fish before you bring any new fish home. And that might take weeks or maybe even months! How can you even enjoy your fish and aquarium if you are constantly having sick fish? i did not buy the fishes. read the thread and get down from your high stool. I am loosing the bookmark and the login - thought people like you give forums bad vibes. thanks to Hanna and Nabi for their help will find someone local to help me and hubby to make sure fishes continue to keep well. very disappointed.

I want to apologize Flash for sounding too harsh. The last thing I want to do is give you a bad feeling about this forum. There are a lot of wonderful people on this site who share more than just a passion for their aquatic pets, they also share a lot of good advice. I am also very passionate about animals and cannot stand to hear of any being mistreated! Sorry, about the lack of subtlety.

thanks Hanna.
could see no point in replying until i did the water tests.
results are all in range except for 7.8ph - but read in book that does not affect goldfish too much as long as stable and as the same result was for tap water i have no reason to think it is the ph... especially as Flash is thriving. and yes the redcap one is not, whilst the black moor i am not sure. the gobi is fine.
going back to ph. read in the book plus on the net that as long as ph is constant fish can cope with ph slightly different from their ideal. also been advised to stay away form playing with ph / trying to change it.
any positive ideas?

ok! this is more constructive the tank has been put set up and running empty (+2 plants) from 2 weeks before the 24th May on this day we got the original 3 fishes. so been going on for a while... on the 24th May we also got another plant which grows on a woody bit. all from same pet store so far. I am trying to remember the data for the other test but all i remember (it is an early morning here) was that were fine. the nitrates were below 40ppm more like 20. Nitrites were also fine and ammonia was the lightest colour on the results charts. no medications have been given except for the ick treatment. water changes been made and replaced with de-chlorinated water. could be simply the tank is taking longer to cycle? is then Flash a right tough cookie as he is doing fine and been there from the beginning? thanks for the help

hello! this is what our goby looks like:
(not our just look like it)
well the red cap goldfish and also blackie the 3rd have gone to the pond beyond.
flash has also been caught sitting at bottom of tank but then perked up. but he does not interact with the goby and last time he was alone he did seem to sit about too... hope is not poorly too....
I am off to measure the tank to work out volume for sure.
the fishes at moment are only about 3cm long (+tail)
