Either way, a nano reef. Do you mean that you'd get a small tank to convert into a saltwater system?
In that case, I'll have to advice against that. First of all, Marine fish and invertebrates need a pretty big system to thrive! You see, as they're used to living in the ocean where the water quality rarely (or never!) changes, they're incredibly sensitive to the smallest fluctuations in water quality, and even the salinity of the tank is something you've got to measure very often.
Not to mention that you need lots of extra equipment, wonderful filtration, and lots of live rock, corals and invertebrates to be able to create the eco system of a marine setup.
The fish are also very expensive as they're quite rare in most aquarium shops. So if you happen to get three-four of them killed, it's not that easy to simply replace them.
You also need to know the nitrogen cycle from top to bottom to be able to prepare the tank for these fish, they can't handle living in a tank that's cycling. Any traces of nitrates for example, are very dangerous to most marine fish.
In other words, it's far more expensive than keeping freshwater fish, and much more time consuming and difficult. So it'd be best if you had experience with keeping some other kind of community tank before that! Like a cichlid setup or some other tropical tank where you need to keep the water quality up to the needs of your fish. As you know, you don't have to do much for goldfish to be healthy in their water, but most other freshwater species need softer/harder, more acidic/alkaline water

Andrea: Well, I guess they accept it to some degree, but them marine fish are incredibly sensitive to nitrogens. That's why a load of filtration is needed, and a really big tank, I'd say nothing smaller than 50-60 gallons. Most people also get a protein skimmer, which removes fat deposits and waste in the tank (needs to be rinsed from time to time) And of course, the invertebrates and live rock will help

I love birds too, I feeed our "wild" ones we have Rainbow Lorikeets coming and Pale Headed Rosellas. Bit a life in the garden... need an airport landing strip, LOL

I've had birds since I was 5 and I'm not 20, always had budgies until we got my lovely pearl cockatiel called Sabrina 10 years ago. Two years later we adopted a 7 year old cockatiel who we called no-name, that is his actual name because nothing else suited him No-name is an old grump but a great whistler and he is absolute love with Sabrina. However, we don't have them together but this hasn't stopped her from laying eggs and last year she became egg bound and she had to have a couple of emergency surgeries. Lucky she was ok in the end, but now we have strict rules she has to live by so she doesn't lay eggs again. 10 seems a bit old to be laying eggs

We fed wild cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets and all sorts of other birds too. There is one brave cockatoo who will let you hand feed it We are all just as crazy about birds as we are about fish it seems.

Hanna I imagine you must have looked funny to have looked like a squirrel who had had his lunch stolen Andrea it seems very true that bird lovers and fish lovers may go hand in hand. I've struggled to keep my Cockatiels from laying and mating and so far so good. When I hear that telltale sound of them twittering, I make a run for it to either separate them or let them out to fly around their room and simmer down LOL. Agreed Nossie, there is nothing like seeing such vibrant colours zooming thru the air. I hope to one day see parrots in the wild myself. You'd have to be careful if you ever got a pond Hanna, those Kookaburras would gobble those fish up. Same with magpies I reckon which we have alot of. It is nearly swooping season too  *hides in house*

Hi Andrea and Hanna

With those adorable spiky feathers, they look like little punk rockers! The little male is 12 days in the pic and the 2 hens are 16 and 17 days old. For all the amazing things that I got to witness with these babies, it was still more stress than I have ever had and I almost lost all of them during those first few weeks as they all developed respiratory illnesses. It was very frightening at times not to mention expensive vet visits but I fell in love with each one the moment they hatched ♥ The vets didn't think they'd survive but I went days with virtually no sleep watching and listening. They are all living full joyful lives thank goodness and they are 9 yrs old now! Even one of the hens had babies of her own so that makes me a Grandbird lady   As for lovebirds, yes you can have one but only if you plan to spend several hours a day interacting and playing with it. They bond fairly quickly if you get them from a breeder directly. But if you don't have them out or handle them for a day or 2 they become aggressive and it can be a bit of a problem. Also they can be very jealous of other birds. The little one in the photo is another adoptee and she has social issues because she was isolated for long periods of time. The people provided her with everything except the time/love she needed and she is a little insane now - bites almost to the bone *ouch  I still adore her though so she came to a place where I can be with her all day everday.
 
Hanna I love your Kookies! Wow how cool is that to have so many lovely garden mates flocking around. Animals know good souls Almost makes one want to hang a sign out saying "nothing but gravy served here!" LOL

Andrea I forgot to mention that I did teach my oldest cockatiel to say a few words like 'hello baby' and 'gimme kiss baby - goodboy' he also whistles the entire theme song to the tv show The Andy Griffith Show! and part of the The X-files theme - too funny

I can't imagine how frightening having an egg bound hen would be, thank goodness you were able to help her ♥ and it's nice to know your male was rescued from an obvious sad situation of being bullied by bigger birds Squeak bites me too sometimes very badly because he was frightened badly years ago and never trusted anyone again. He still lets me give him kisses though
