Loving my little aquarium...but I think I need a bigger one soon...

It's been just over a month since I restarted/cleaned out the old tank and replaced gravel and started monitoring the water quality with test kits. Coming to understand how the dynamics of the tank work has been an interesting learning experience. It has also been frustrating especially when you think you are doing everything by the book. In any case I've had wonderful feedback from a number of you on here and I'm so grateful to each of you for your sharing of knowledge. I do believe you helped me save my little Ryukin from the 'great pond beyond'
I am wondering about starting one of those Nano reefs but I don't know how they work. I guess it's back to researching some more. For now Mr. Tailer and I share the house with 7 other residents; 5 Cockatiels (Squeak, Daizy, Lily, Holly and Kipper)1 Lovebird (Muchacha) and 1 Budgie bird (Sir Joe Manjo) I'm a bird lover too and my name is April
Happy tanking everyone
and thank you for such a warm welcome to your community!

It's so pretty
Loving your fish
Either way, a nano reef. Do you mean that you'd get a small tank to convert into a saltwater system?
In that case, I'll have to advice against that. First of all, Marine fish and invertebrates need a pretty big system to thrive! You see, as they're used to living in the ocean where the water quality rarely (or never!) changes, they're incredibly sensitive to the smallest fluctuations in water quality, and even the salinity of the tank is something you've got to measure very often.
Not to mention that you need lots of extra equipment, wonderful filtration, and lots of live rock, corals and invertebrates to be able to create the eco system of a marine setup.
The fish are also very expensive as they're quite rare in most aquarium shops. So if you happen to get three-four of them killed, it's not that easy to simply replace them.
You also need to know the nitrogen cycle from top to bottom to be able to prepare the tank for these fish, they can't handle living in a tank that's cycling. Any traces of nitrates for example, are very dangerous to most marine fish.
In other words, it's far more expensive than keeping freshwater fish, and much more time consuming and difficult. So it'd be best if you had experience with keeping some other kind of community tank before that! Like a cichlid setup or some other tropical tank where you need to keep the water quality up to the needs of your fish. As you know, you don't have to do much for goldfish to be healthy in their water, but most other freshwater species need softer/harder, more acidic/alkaline water

Remind me never to get a saltwater tank
No sign of nitrates at all? Wow, on top of everything else well I think I'd explode. I wonder how they do it.
Mr. Tailer, maybe you could try with a little tropical tank first? Aquariums are definitely something you need to work your way up on and there is plenty of amazing tropical freshwater fish out there
I love to see another bird lover on here, I currently have two cockatiels.

Andrea: Well, I guess they accept it to some degree, but them marine fish are incredibly sensitive to nitrogens. That's why a load of filtration is needed, and a really big tank, I'd say nothing smaller than 50-60 gallons. Most people also get a protein skimmer, which removes fat deposits and waste in the tank (needs to be rinsed from time to time) And of course, the invertebrates and live rock will help

Thank you, and I appreciate the 'fins/heads' up about the salt water systems. I was up for hours last night reading about them and they are incredibly complex and expensive compared to fresh water tanks. I wouldn't want to risk any fish or living coral to my inexperience in that matter. My brother had a 135 gallon salt water reef tank - was gorgeous but so much work he eventually gave all the inhabitants back to the store (in good health) and dismantled it. I will stick to my little one for now as I so enjoy taking care of Mr. Tailer ♥ thanks again Nossie, hope Claymore is doing well ♥
I am simply nuts about birds Andrea and have kept them for over 15 years. My oldest Cockatiel Squeak is 14 followed by Daizy 13, Lily 12, and 2 of their 3 babies Kipper and Holly who are 9 now. In 2000 early October, I came home to my then highrise apt. and heard a familiar bird call from outside. I went out on my balcony and saw that is was a beautiful Lutino Cockatiel circling the building. I quickly ran back inside and brought out one of my empty cages and sat in on the table and whistled for about 20 minutes to try and coax her towards my balcony. It was getting dark and difficult to see her so I went back in again and tilted a floor lamp to shine out my window and guess what? She flew right towards me and landed on my chest! Never found her owner after months of posting pics of her in a local mall and asking around and she ended up mating with Daizy and we had 3 babies
Crazy wonderful world huh?

HI APRIL,
how lovely Mr.Tailer is in his tank and a beautiful set up too.
Here you can get more info about the nano reef setup:
(

)
Also there is the page (
Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.
) with info about the nano cube and how it works.
I agree, one should understand the nitrogen cycle, its imortance etc, but according to the equipment it is more expensive than difficult.
Sorry for my late answer, have't been on the net yesterday. We had some people coming for a barbie, they are "fish-professionals" the guy is a chemistry scientists, he develops aquarium products. We waffled about fish, all the time had big fun too. ( will post about those in a new thread
)
Anyway, I don't want to "hijack" your thread, only sorry for not replying quicker
Bisically I woudn't strictly advise against it, but I advise like it already was mentioned to be very familiar with "normal" fishkeeping before deciding to get into nano technology.

A dear friend of mine who lives in Sydney sent me a photo of Cockatoos sitting on power lines like we have pigeons and crows over here in Canada. I was amazed. One of these days I'm gonna visit your side of the world

I've had birds since I was 5 and I'm not 20, always had budgies until we got my lovely pearl cockatiel called Sabrina 10 years ago. Two years later we adopted a 7 year old cockatiel who we called no-name, that is his actual name because nothing else suited him
No-name is an old grump but a great whistler and he is absolute love with Sabrina. However, we don't have them together but this hasn't stopped her from laying eggs and last year she became egg bound and she had to have a couple of emergency surgeries. Lucky she was ok in the end, but now we have strict rules she has to live by so she doesn't lay eggs again. 10 seems a bit old to be laying eggs
We fed wild cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets and all sorts of other birds too. There is one brave cockatoo who will let you hand feed it
We are all just as crazy about birds as we are about fish it seems.

Hanna I imagine you must have looked funny to have looked like a squirrel who had had his lunch stolen
Andrea it seems very true that bird lovers and fish lovers may go hand in hand. I've struggled to keep my Cockatiels from laying and mating and so far so good. When I hear that telltale sound of them twittering, I make a run for it to either separate them or let them out to fly around their room and simmer down LOL. Agreed Nossie, there is nothing like seeing such vibrant colours zooming thru the air. I hope to one day see parrots in the wild myself. I've attached a few pics of my feathered kids if you'd like to see them
Have a great weekend!

Omg I just squealed sooo much over those baby cockatiels, how old were they there?? Maybe I should let my birds have babies haha
Nah they are both too old I think at 10 and 15/16, plus the male is very aggressive as I said. Are your's tame? Do they talk? We could never get either to talk but I read that cockatiels are more known for there whistling than talking.
We always run to the cage when we see Sabrina on the bottom of the cage, ripping at the paper and such. She must not lay eggs!! Haha.
Gorgeous budgie and love bird, I think I want a love bird to be my next. Do they go ok by themselves?

You'd have to be careful if you ever got a pond Hanna, those Kookaburras would gobble those fish up. Same with magpies I reckon which we have alot of. It is nearly swooping season too

Lol, yes I know, the Magpies love sausages, the Kookie loves dogmeatroll.
"My" Magpies never had a go at me or my hubby during swooping season, always waiting for food, even come inside and I had to shuuu them back out those cheeky things, before they poo all over the place.
Never seen the Kookie pooing
I think those Magpies would swoop everybody else to protect us too
Won't have a pond, not here where we're renting anyway,
Wouldn't mind maybe an indoor pond in a room like a "winter garden" or so.... eventually in the future in our own house.... dream again....

Hi Andrea and Hanna
With those adorable spiky feathers, they look like little punk rockers! The little male is 12 days in the pic and the 2 hens are 16 and 17 days old. For all the amazing things that I got to witness with these babies, it was still more stress than I have ever had and I almost lost all of them during those first few weeks as they all developed respiratory illnesses. It was very frightening at times not to mention expensive vet visits but I fell in love with each one the moment they hatched ♥ The vets didn't think they'd survive but I went days with virtually no sleep watching and listening. They are all living full joyful lives thank goodness and they are 9 yrs old now! Even one of the hens had babies of her own so that makes me a Grandbird lady
As for lovebirds, yes you can have one but only if you plan to spend several hours a day interacting and playing with it. They bond fairly quickly if you get them from a breeder directly. But if you don't have them out or handle them for a day or 2 they become aggressive and it can be a bit of a problem. Also they can be very jealous of other birds. The little one in the photo is another adoptee and she has social issues because she was isolated for long periods of time. The people provided her with everything except the time/love she needed and she is a little insane now - bites almost to the bone *ouch
I still adore her though so she came to a place where I can be with her all day everday.
Hanna I love your Kookies! Wow how cool is that to have so many lovely garden mates flocking around. Animals know good souls
Almost makes one want to hang a sign out saying "nothing but gravy served here!" LOL

Aw that's so sad, but I'm so happy they made it through and are now very happy adults
I can just imagine how horrible it would have been
Birds are scary because they don't show when they are sick and can die from the smallest stress, that's why when my bird became egg bound it was also very scary.
Thanks for that info, I don't think I could have one then but maybe when I move out. But yours is so gorgeous
My male cockatiel is very aggressive and has made me bleed multiple times due to him biting me, he came from an aviary where he was picked on by all the bigger birds. So I think he thinks he must always stick up for himself. Though over the years I reckon he has come attached to us, even if he won't admit it

Andrea I forgot to mention that I did teach my oldest cockatiel to say a few words like 'hello baby' and 'gimme kiss baby - goodboy' he also whistles the entire theme song to the tv show The Andy Griffith Show! and part of the The X-files theme - too funny
I can't imagine how frightening having an egg bound hen would be, thank goodness you were able to help her ♥ and it's nice to know your male was rescued from an obvious sad situation of being bullied by bigger birds
Squeak bites me too sometimes very badly because he was frightened badly years ago and never trusted anyone again. He still lets me give him kisses though
