Oh ok, I couldn't see it very well in the picture.

what other kind of tropical fish do you have?
I have zebra danios and they are big too! A golden gourami and a pleco and a pictus catfish and then the 2 clown loaches.

ok, sorry about the photo quality
I also have glowlight tetras, two female bettas (they don't pick on each other, they've known each other for AGES, but I'll be getting more soon), 4 clown loaches, 2 plecos (but one is in the goldie tank), and three rasboras. Love them all!!!
btw, my clown loaches are named Cracker Jack (Cracker), Pepper, Houdini, and Mozart. the one in the pic is Houdini.
Very nice tanks there with some cute fish

I saw a clown loach that was probably about 20cms long today, maybe a bit shorter, but they look amazing at that size!
Why would you re-do your whole goldfish tank?? What are you going to do with your fish while you are doing this? By getting new gravel and cleaning the filter you are going to destroy all the good bacteria and have to re-cycle the tank, if the fish are in there they could get very sick or die

I would just re-decorate it without touching the filter or gravel, there is no need really.
wow, big clown loaches!

what I am planning to do is take the goldies out of the tank for a few weeks and place them in a bucket (with the heater, of course!) and I am going to re-do the tank.
First off, I need to clean out the gravel, but I might as well get new gravel anyway since the old stuff is all algae-y and grimy looking, I want to add real plants so I need a thicker layer of gravel, and I don't have any more of that kind.

Also, the filter has so much gunk growing on it that it would just make me gag looking at the thing

I don't mind re cycling the tank though. I think it's pretty suspenseful, true, but it's still fun!!
But thanks for letting me know about the bacteria - I will also add beneficial bacteria when I cycle the tank!
