What would you call this colouring?

Our lionhead has really nice colouring but I'm not sure how to refer to him/her.. is it lemonhead? I don't know because of the black and the sort of translucent quality to her back that makes her look a bit pinkish

Our lionhead has really nice colouring that I've never really seen before but I'm not sure how to refer to it.. the head is sort of lemon but the body is white with a pinkish quality because of the translucence and there are little black flecks

Does he/she have metallic scales?

If so its a calico. If not its a tri-colored.

Actually to be considered calico they must have a blue(ish) background with red and black on top. I have seen mettalic calicoes. A mix of matte and a few metallic scales is called narcreous. If they have three colors but are not red/black on blue then they are called tri-colored.
Also (since we are in fish identification) I believe that is a ranchu. Lionheads have straighter backs and a more developed headgrowth. Yours seems to have a shorter, rounder body and pronounced tail-tuck. I have been researching Ranchus like crazy the past week. Wink

The difference between ranchus and lionheads is pretty obvious, and this is for sure a ranchu Smiley Lionheads don't have that cute rounded back at all... c:

I would actually go and call this fish a matte black and white fish Smiley Simply because I can't see any other colors in this photo and also because the gill covers don't seem to be reflective. Usually on naucreous and calico fish the gill covers will be metallic Smiley

With minimal headgrowth, so not the best example since lionheads are known for their massive headgrowths Smiley

We thought ranchu too initially but the head growth just didn't seem to be the right shape.. It's like an even covering around the whole head rather than being more on the cheeks

Still a ranchu, note how the lion head has a very straight back compared to the ranchu. Every fish has different head growth, it all depends on their parents and genetics Smiley

Originally ranchus had small heads with small headgrowths but now the trend is to breed for "buffalo heads" (like mine) both types are acceptable.

Jordon has just been browsing online and found several places that refer to our ranchu's colouring as 'snow leopard'?? Someone has said it is rare apparently but I doubt that but we think its cool Smiley

Snow leopard...that sounds cool. Where'd you find her? I have never seen one in the petstores around here.

We happened across her in pets at home. Never seen anything like her before so we decided to have her. Can't even find one that looks like her on the Internet but there must be some out there.. She'll probably become partially orange as she gets older if she's a 'calico snow leopard' which we've found a few pictures of

It rarely happens that pigments come from nowhere. If there's no red visible on her now, there probably never will be, but if you notice some small spots of it somewhere it may spread and change shape Smiley
