you know, this doesn't answer your question, but as a companion question, "Is all algae green?"
   I have stuff I thought was algae, but it's aslo a more of a brownish/reddish color. Is it algae? Something else? I don't want my snails to eat it if it's gonna hurt the funky little critters so I cleaned off most of it.  Huh

hi i think alge comes in green red &brown ? snails will eat it .just dont know what causes it

I realise that those posts are not the latest ones, but I had brownish-green algae growing
in our tank too. And yes, I believe algae grow in different colours and I was told by Nossie that our fish love
nibbling on green algae. They are like a snack for them.

But with the other ones, feel free to remove them.

So I did yesterday cleaning the tank, vacuuming the gravel, washing the pebbles and plants.
Those algae are slimy when you rub them off, you can feel it. Also they do not look nice.

I also added "Vita Pet Algae Control" into the fresh water and we decided to minimise the time
the light is on. Now only from 1pm to 9pm. We used to have it on from 6am to 9pm.

jeff d:: If things are turning very brown it could be that your tank might be crowded or that your filter isn't big enough, but I don't think it would be harmful to your fish, just a pain to clean d:
Although, it could be good for you to take a look at nitrates, which algae feed on. Algae tend to be a bigger problem in tanks without any live plants as well, if that would be an option.

While I'm at it, what size tank do you have and how many fish do you keep in it? You might want to test for nitrates just in case.

So then it could be a little bit crowded (: I assume that your fish are rather small for now though, but it could be good to upgrade to a bigger tank at some point since one goldfish needs about 10 gallons of water, meaning that your four goldfish need 40 gallons.
For now I think you just have to clean the algae off and change water regularly Wink

Hello guys,

Since we reduced the light being on, now only 8 hours, instead of 12-15 there is hardly any brown algae growing in our tank.
I also removed the brown parts of the Elodea. Water is crystal clear, there are very little green algae and our fishies are happy.

What size tank did you get?  Is it the 10 gallon from your cousin or did you find a different one?

It's my cousin's tank, yea Wink I bought a nice air stone and a piece of tubing and some grovel for it, can't wait to put it together! *sparkle*
And I'll definitely show you some pics! : D

I can't get anything bigger until June or so, whenever we'll be moving (: I've got a nice piece of furniture that would be great under a 200 liter (53 gallon) tank! Cheesy

Yeah, cannot wait to see your new tank, and it is so exciting to set it up and watch your fishies looking what your doing.

As we set ours up just next to the small one we had them in first, they observed everything we did and when it was ready
we let it cycle for 1 day ( I used some of the plants I had in the small one plus some new ones, also put some tank water in it, to get it cycled quicker ) and our fishies had flat little noses looking at that new world they could not swim to. And gee, when we put them into their new home, what a joy for them.

they still are growing in our tank, not as much though. I read this can be a phosphate problem.
I prepare the weekly waterchange today. I added algae control again, but not only for the amount of the water I'll change but for the whole tank volume.

Hope this will reduce those brown things. Fishies are doing well, they do not show any unusual behaviour or discomfort.
Does anybody have experience in this matter?

I have a pretty ugly, brown carpet growing on my Anubias :C But I just clean that off with a soft cleaning cloth that I use for my tank (: It seems to work to some extent d: And my fish like eating it. You can actually see little patches of algae being bitten away on some places, it's a bit cute C:
