Willy Update

It's been a week tomorrow and Willy is still rockin it, he's swimming around gingerly but was able to eat some peas tonight. Funny thing I've have sick fish before and normally the "others" in the tank kind of gang up on the sick fish however; my other goldie, Benjamin and my catfish, salty, have been quite gentle towards him. Benjamin will actually sit at the bottom of the tank for a while then go about swimming around. I've kept goldie tanks for the past 10 years and have never seen anything like this before. Anyway Willy still has the weird tumor rock thing in his gut but it doesn't look like he's going anywhere anytime soon.
Thanks again for all the insight. I'm a goldfish nerd and I'm glad I found this site.

Here is as pic of Benjamin and Willy - Bizarre I know they are fish and normally they weed out the weak ones but my Benji kinda just hangs with Willy and doesn't hurt him even though he's sick.

Congratulations Tipper! Wonderful news about Willy making a comeback! I know I've probably shared this with y'all before...but here goes. When I bought a ranchu/fantail cross he was super stressed out and we didn't think he would make it. I considered putting him down but decided against it, placing him in the main tank (where Opal was the only resident at the time). Opal, my sweat little baby boy red cap oranda, in comparison to Sterling who was about about two inches larger, saved Sterling's life. Sterling was stressed out so much he was breathing extremely rapidly. Opal (here's the awesome part) swam up to him and BEGAN NUDGING HIS SIDE AND WRAPPING HIS BODY AROUND HIM. They were both male fish and so I knew no breeding behavior was present. Sterling seemed calmed every time Opal would "hug" him, and his breathing would slow. Every time Opal swam away, Sterling began to freak out, until Opal returned to comfort him. The two remained friends for a long long time, Sterling following the tiny Opal around like a puppy dog. This is proof goldfish really do form mini friendships

I hope willy continues to get better. Such a sweet stories of bonding. thanks for sharing them. i have a story that in my opinion proves that they do bond with each other. I have a fish (nibbles) who is stunted at about 1 1/2 inches and has permanent swim bladder. well when he first started having problems he had a hard time resting because he would float sideways and float away (couldnt keep himself in one spot to rest), well poppet his buddy who was almost 3 times his size when this happened (they started off around same size) would come to corner of tank where nibbles was trying to rest and she would lay her body on top of him to hold him between the glass, gravel and herself. She also wouldnt tolerate any other fish except waddles coming near him at these timesof rest. it was so sweet she would rest there with him. She could be swimming around tank not even looking like she was going to rest but whenever she would find him in his sleeping corner she would help him, she stayed there once they got into postition for as long as he seemed to want to stay, but when they would drift apart some and nibbles would accidentally slip out of the their little cocoon poppet would back up and wait for him to get back in his spot (this took a bit since he swims kindof out of control) then she wold go back in and rest on him again lol. they did this everyday for months till i got a new larger tank, after that nibbles found a way to wedge himself between the air bubble wand, air tubing and wall but poppet would still rest nearby like a protector. I had a video on my phone of it but when my phone go stolen it was gone. tried to find it on my computer but guess i had not had chance to load it since its nowhere to be found, so sad i would like that video memory:'( I lost poppet to that nasty bacterial infection on her wen at begining of november and i can tell nibbles misses her just as i do, was afraid he might die after she was gone but so far he is ok

Glad to hear all these great stories. Goldfish are really great pets. One more thing to mention, Willy and Benjamin were in the same tank, just the two of them, at the pet store so they have been together for quite some time We almost didn't get Willy. We were just about to leave with Benjamin but when we looked and saw Willy all by himself in this big tank we couldn't resist and brought them both home. They are great buds.
