Canabalism?

Hello,

I am new to this formum but have already read some interesting information and now realise I am a rubbish goldfish owner.

I have two biorbs, a big one (think its 60 litres) and a slightly smaller one and in the large one I have three goldfish (quite big ones, originally from the fair and won by my children) and two in the smaller one.  I am now sure these tanks are too small.

Until I find someone with a pond, can you tell me why one fish is picking on another and nibbling at his abdomen until the scales are picked off and flaps of "skin" appear.  Temporarily, this goldfish is in a tank without a filter so that he/she can survive in the immediate future.

Thanks for reading this and please don't tell me off too much as these fish have sentimental value and are much loved by my children - am on the hunt for someone with a pond who lives near Princes Risborough!!!

To answer your question,  goldfish are bullies by nature . This nipping and biting behavior can be made worse if they are placed in an environment that is too small to accommodate them.  A faster swimming goldfish sometimes will pick on the slower swimmer  so goldfish of different body types should not be mixed together.   You are doing the right thing by separating them temporarily. 

You will probably need to upgrade to a larger tank to help reduce this nipping problem or keep them separated.

Thank you for that.  And you are right, of course.  They are mixed types, and although I have had these goldfish for several years, this hasn't happened before.  Think I have found someone with a pond where they will be much happier and will keep one big tank and get two very small fish!! Didn't know they were bullies....... I really like this website, by the way, although I have kept these fish for some time there is lots I don't know, but do now..... thank you.

I'd also recommend adding some sea salt or aquarium salt to the fish tank (one teaspoon per gallon) just to help the fish with damaged skin heal up and make sure that no secondary infection starts Smiley

If you feel like your goldfish is suffering yes you should euthanize it.

You should not attempt to euthanize your fish by putting it in the freezer, which will cause it a lot of unnecessary suffering and is inhumane. Clove oil is outdated and actually suffocates the goldfish slowly. The best way to euthanize a fish is to use 1 part water to 1 part clear spirit like vodka. Then place your fish in the water mixture, which will kill the it very fast.
