I think it's just good that you post your questions in this thread cheri_alexander Smiley That way people who just join the forum or something might see it and notice that there already are answers Cheesy

In any case, I love posting pictures, so I found one with a calico koi that has a bout of fin rot. Here you clearly see the difference between the white tail and the rot:

It might help someone if there's a picture of lighter fish too Smiley

Ah darn! I made a new topic without seeing your reply! That looks really bad...and very different from what I'm experiencing...oh how I wish Dr. Landers was in town! Blackthorn's tail has a white edge all along it but is only slighty frayed...not like pieces missing or anything like that.

Thanks for that nossie, so it would seem where a fishes white fins are usaully translucent, the fin rot is quite opaque  Smiley

I can't believe that the h2O2 bottle says that it can be used as a gargle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hydrogen peroxide is a metabolic poison

Yes, peroxide is deffinately not supposed to be swallowed if used as a gargle. I personally hate the taste so I use a specified mouthwash if needed.

Hey Goldie- another question: If the peroxide does not fizz at all then is there no infection?? This is my recent rescue. I am treating this tail injury which does not appear to be finrot and it fizzes like crazy. But he has several spots on his wen which are usually white, sometimes a bit grayer (not ich, not fuzzy) so I dabbed one with peroxide and nothing happened.... does that mean there isn't anything wrong?

White dots on the wen is an indication of lack of blood flow while the when is growing, it can get infected, but it's unlikely as long as the fish is kept in a cycled system with good water quality Smiley Many think of them just as little dots of new headgrowth, and even more people believe it to be infections and treat their fish to death.

I don't know if the peroxide reacts differently on things like that though?

QUESTION FOR GOLDIEGIRL!! (or anyone who has experience/an answer really Smiley)
Wasn't it possible to treat fungus with hydrogen peroxide? Naturally, I mean smaller patches of fungus. I have a feeling I read that here once?

Hey Nossie, just discovered your question.  Haven't been to this thread in a while, forgive me for my bad forum manners lol!

Yes it totally IS possible to treat fungus on fish with hydrogen peroxide. I have done it and can truthfully report success.  Smiley

Sweet, thanks! Smiley I was just thinking in a preventive manner, remembering how Samantha once got a patch of fungus on the side, very small, but I didn't have hydrogen peroxide at the time so I just separated her and she didn't like it in the quarantine tank. Figured it would be pretty unnecessary to separate fish for such a tiny dot that can easily be fixed with the peroxide Smiley

Yes, peroxide works great for fungus in my experience, mostly for small patches and stuff like that.  The last fish I had that had a fungal problem was Onyx (*sniff*) and the peroxide cleared it up pretty quick.

Adding salt to the water can help that as well I'm told.

This was great Goldiegirl!  Smiley
I just have a quick question...My fish has recently been involved in a accident where he got stuck in an ornament when I was away and is now quite wounded, he has scales missing, tares in his fins and scuffs on his head! Sad I feel so sorry for him!
I haven't got any hydrogen peroxide at the moment but do you think it would be useful to use in my case? Or wait and see what happens first as they may heal without infection?

If I were you, I'd get some Smiley Since the fish probably got pretty stressed from the incident it's a pretty high chance for infection...

After 3 weeks, most likely Smiley Just make sure you keep the water quality pristine and you feed lots of nutritious live foods and veggies Smiley

You can also use hydrogen peroxide as a dip.
Use 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 9 parts water (You can use tank water or fresh water that has been treated with a conditioner)
Put your fish in and let him sit in this solution for 10 secs. Smiley
Then take him out by hand and return him to the tank. Wink

I have been looking for medications to use as a dip, sometimes my fish get little scratches or tears in their fins and I am very reluctant to separate them just for that.
Have you tried the dip with Hydrogen peroxide yourself? Smiley

Yes I have.  It works well for almost any time you might think a fish has external parasites which can cause a secondary infection from sucking the blood of the fish.
It also works well for bloody fins, the start of fin rot or septicemia, fungal infections.
The recipe came from Ken Fischer of Dandy Orandas.
I have used the dab method too, for many years.
Both work really well. Smiley
