Bubbles from gills!
« on: February 11, 2012, 09:27:12 PM »

Ok starting to feel like I am spamming this forum, but flash just came up to the surface of the tank for food and bubbles were coming out of his gills! I have never seen him do this before! Is it something I should be worried about? I am so worried they may have picked something up from Daryl!

Flash now appears to have what looks like a White film over his body, I saw somewhere that this could be ich, he doesn't appear to have any White spots just this film! Is this ich? I don't want to treat him for ich/White spot if it isn't that! Can anyone advice me on what to do and has anyone ever had this as a synonym of ich in their tank? He is flashing, rubbing up against things and occasionally he will just sit at the bottom if his tank! He is still eating though! I an determined not to loose another fish!

If the fish is by the surface gulping air, there will usually be bubbles around Smiley

White film is usually a symptom of bad water quality, I suggest a large water change, and if it would make you feel better add a teaspoon of salt per gallon of water Smiley

I'm testing the water now! The nitarte, nitrate, PH, GH, KH and chlorine are fine. I'm just testing the ammonia now! It is a little high 0.25! I will do a water change as suggested and I have some biological aquarium supplement that I can put in aswell as some tap water conditioner! Im a bit worried about putting salt in with the plecs!

I did the water change and treated the water! Before I did the were both sitting on the bottom, in the cave, not moving! Now Merle is swimming around and although Flash is still in the cave he isnt on the bottom and is swimming around in there!

I think the biological aquarium supplement might have been upsetting them because I put some in yesterday and they weren't happy this morning, when I first changed the water they were happy this morning put some of that in and within an hour they were sitting at the bottom of the tank again! I have just change the water again this time I have only put tap water conditioner and salt in the tank and they are eating and happily swimming around again! We will see how they are tomorrow! Fingers crossed!

It is probably the ammonia, once you have it in there it'll take a while to get it out :/ Just keep testing the water every time you notice the fish acting strange!!
And for the record, my pleco did just fine with salt in the water Smiley
