White Spots On Fish's Head
« on: November 26, 2011, 05:00:41 PM »

Please can someone help me?
I have a fish that looks ill but I can't seem to find out for sure what it is.
I have a 650 gallon pond with very good if not perfect water, it's not over stocked and my four gold fish share this pond with 6 koi.
At the start of October we had some warm weather in Essex and it was not really usual for that time of year, I saw some small white spots on the head of one of my goldfish, I did a little looking on the internet and saw that it could be "breeding tubercles" and not "white spot" as it was only around the head.
I then went to my local fish store and told them all this and they said that the chances of it being "breeding tubercles" were very high and it was all normal.
Now almost 2 months have gone by and they are getting bigger and bigger and look like they have burst and getting worse. The fish is fine other than that. It swims fine, eats fine and got away from me fine when I was trying to catch it, the little MOFO!!
I have taken this fish out of my pond today and put him/her in a tank under my watchful eye.
I have also seen another gold fish with one, very small, but exact looking spot too.
If someone could help I would be so thankful. I think it's great that other people share what they know about fish to help others, and I hope I can learn something here that I could maybe help someone else with.
Many Thanks
Chris.
P.S. I hope the pics help

Thanks for the reply. I'm not too sure that it is ICH because my water has been treated for that after the white spots were already there. Also, aren't the spots from ICH all over the body of the fish? My fish only has these on it's head.
Thanks again for taking the time to message me.

Goodness me, what an odd situation...

The people who were saying it was breeding tubercules? I believed those always appeared on the gills, not the top of the head >.>
Scrivens has a point with Ick, but I thought that looked more like a fish had been sprinkled with salt? Not big spots in one area?

Are the spots smooth or fuzzy? It's hard to tell from the photo...
Hmmmm maybe it's a bacterial/fungus issue?

Here are two articles that have some information on various diseases and such, hope they help out!

Many get well wishes to your fish! He is a cutie! Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I'm still learning myself!
Hopefully some others will be along soon to help out  Smiley

Skwhishee, thanks for the reply. You are right about it not being tubercules. When they first started the first ones were on the gill plates. As time has gone on they have spread as you can see and got bigger. My thinking was the same as you about it being fungal. I really don't want to treat my water/fish for ich because I'm really sure it's not that and it's not good to treat the water for something they don't have. I think I will take a sample and look at it under my microscope, then I think I will treat this fish in the tank with salt. If this works I think I will salt my pond. I have a very good treatment for ich and I trust it 100%. As I have treated my water for this less than 2 months ago I am ruling out ich all together. As for how the spots look, they started off looking very smooth and as they have got bigger they have started to look more fuzzy.
Thanks for your help and if you are thinking the same as me then you have helped.

If its fuzzy.....

On the first article I linked, it has this about white fuzzy spots;

"Flex

Symptoms: cottony like growths, sometimes moldy looking (if your fish is in a pond, white fuzzy growth could also be a fungus, Saprolegnia.)
Treatment: Despite its fungus look, flex is caused by a bacterium. It will respond to Medi-Gold or common water antibiotics like Kanamycin, Spectogram or Maracyn and Maracyn 2. (Remember Marcyn and Maracyn 2 are not compatible with Medigold). Adding salt to the water (3 teaspoons per gallon) also helps because it keeps flex from being able to stick to the fish."

The second article, with Diagnosing by Symptoms, goes into more details if you'd like to give that one a read.

So it could be Flex or Saprolegnia? I'm afraid I have little experience, but I use GAB alot when I'm ever un sure about something. I'd say give the salt a go, hopefully it will help your fish get better  Smiley

I'd be interested to hear how diagnosing with the microscope goes! I'd love to be able to do that one day, no more guessing on symptoms!

Good luck, I hope the salt treatment works!

I have the answer!!! Carp pox. It's nothing to be worried about and will not harm my fish.
Thanks for the info and ideas that people have put forward. I have learned something new and I'm happy Smiley.

Oh, I was about to point out that it couldn't be tubercles nor ich since the white spots are far too big and protruding, not to mention that the goldfish develop breeding stars for spring when their breeding season starts!

But I'm glad you found out what it is Smiley
I have read that it might help with a little salt dosage, just to minimize the cysts a little bit, but it's not always successful, and they don't seem to be in an area that would hurt the fish. If I remember right, carp pox is also a viral disease and they're rarely curable, but all the better that this one is harmless. I'm so happy your fish is okay Smiley

It's one of the more simple diseases to understand, it basically just causes cysts on goldfish and koi, usually only in those kept in ponds. Like I also mentioned its a viral disease so the only thing to do really is to make sure that the cysts aren't in places that could hurt the fish Smiley (Such as around the gills, eyes, mouth or vent).

I went to my local fish store with these pics a got the fella in the shop to have a look and he told me in a second what it was. He also said its no different than us having a cold sore and the may go when the water warms up in the summer. Some fish have built up an immune system to it when others have not and that's just the way it is but now I know and I can add it to my list of other things I've had to learn while keeping koi and goldies. If I can take some good pics of them on a nice day then I will post them on here for you both to have a look at. The pond is still slightly under construction as I built it at the end of the summer so the it looks a little plain. I hope to plant some flowers around it and give it some real colour for the spring.
There are many small goldfish, four bigger goldfish, one Ochiba Shigure (brown and grey), two ghost (1 orange and black the other white/grey and black), four Mirror (one Linear and one around 2 1/2 lb) and two common koi (one white and one a really).
They are all still really shy but I'll try to catch them unaware.

I guess they'll be more comfortable when they're more used to the environment Smiley
How exciting! The pond will be changing almost constantly once you'll have the plants there later! Cheesy
