Hey Smiley

I did a little research, but I didn't find any answers which would help me... I'm asking about the colors of common and comet goldfish. They are usually yellow, orange, red or white... Or red-white combination, and shubunkins which have black patches.

Anyways, a few weeks back I bought 2 really beautiful orange babies with a black line across their back and fins... But after a few days, the color vanished and they turned into pure orange. Some time later, I got 3 larger fish, one of them being gray and 2 others with a black line and fins. The black scales aren't shiny, but other have a distinct metal shine. Is there anything I can do to prevent them from recoloring?
What happens when a fish looses it's color? And I'm hard-pressed to find any information about black color on comet/common goldfish.
Does it have anything to do with food? light? water quality? changing from pond (masive breeding) to aquarium? stress?

How big/old are your fish?  Baby or young fish are grey colored and start to turn orange gradually.  Some of the fish at the pet stores that are orange and black are just turning colors and will be all orange later on as they mature.
There is color enhancing food available that will bring out a deep orange almost red in some fish.
A fish when they sleep will lose some color and will look faded or washed out some.  I would guess that both of your fish are not full grown yet and will go through color changes as they mature. Smiley

the guy thad sold them to me, said, they are around 3 years (which i doubt...they were from pond and live in aquarium for about 3-4 months).
size: the grey one is about 8cm (4inch?) without tail
the yellow-black is a bit smaller.
do the pond breedet fish change color later than the ones in stores (where even the babies 2-3cm are total orange) ?

I have seen pitch black comets actually! They have a velveteen color, like a black moor (: But I don't know how it is with the color on comets... The case is that the black is most permanent in the moor than in any other variety, and it's common that most goldfish change into red as they mature, even moors, so it's rather rare to find a plain black fish that will stay that way!
But I do think your iron colored fish is gonna stay this way if he's older than one year, which he almost has to be if he's this big.
Unfortunately though, I don't know about this black/white fish of yours! I haven't really seen anything similar before, but the markings remind me of those on a sarasa comet (red/orange as you may know),  so I can't see why he wouldn't stay black and silver like this (:
