Shabunkin with bump on side.

My shabunkin lived in a 500 gallon pond with other goldfish. Two weeks ago I noticed it was not acting right so I pulled it out of the pond and isolated it. It looked like it had dropsy (swollen and pinecone looking) so I medicated the water and now he is acting and looking just fine. His appetite his great and he's swiming around like nothing is wrong. The only thing is he has a bump on his side. Should I be concerned about the bump. Should I put him back into the pond (temperatures are in the 40's here) I attached a couple of pictures to show the bumb. I have no idea what it might be.

I have a comet with a bump like that on his side too.
He has had it for so many years and seems to act fine with it.
I guess I just assumed it was an injury from spawning aggressively with the other fish.
I keep my fish in a pond in the summer and take them inside for the winter.
I've never separated him from the other fish and he seems just fine.

The water temperature is probably too cold to put the shubunkin back in. There's a good chance he won't make it through the winter in his current condition so you should keep him inside until the pond water is warmer.

The bump could be many things; tumor, cyst under the skin, etc. While your temps are that low in the pond, you should not feed them. Only when the water is above 60 degrees and even then, it should be a wheat germ-based food. As long as he is acting okay now, you could put him back in the pond. However, if you were feeding while the water temps were low, then the dropsy could have been caused by constipation as fish cannot process food in low water temps.
