very sad news :(
« on: July 05, 2010, 04:58:13 AM »

im in shock and am so upset. i returned home from holiday last night only to find my beautifull 5 inch orange oranda has dropsy  Cry he's still alive at the moment but he now looks like he's eaten a gold ball and his scales are at right angles! im so upset! now i know dropsy can sometimes be caused by water quality so i tested it straight away and it came back fine Sad im just gutted. obv this website says to put him out of his pain but i just cant do it Sad so upset  Cry

ps none of my other fish are ill. the rest are eating fine and swimming perfect. i know dropsy is often caused by water condition but from what i read on here it can also be a internal organ problem and as all my water tests have come back spot on i have a feeling its a internal problem. . . just so upset  Cry

Oh no! Cry That's terrible!! I'm so sorry for him Sad
I think you should be keeping an eye on your other fish in case they'll show symptoms... it might be bacterial, so look out for any bloated fish, partially raised scales or protruding eyes!

Just so you know, Dropsy can be caused by pretty much anything from bacterial infections to parasites and water quality problems so... sometimes it's really hard to figure out a reason Sad But yeah, like you said it can be symptoms on an infection in the kidneys too, and then you can't do anything to help because it's usually gotten so far then already Sad

And, I've heard about some easy and humane (even if it sounds cruel) method of putting a fish down, if he's suffering much from this. You could put him in a bag or other container with water from the main system, and simply put him into the freezer. You need to leave the fish alone for a couple of hours, because if you'll run around checking on him all the time you'll just cause unnecessary stress for him. This method works really well, because the fish can be in peace and quiet, and he won't feel any kind of pain before he dies. I found it when I was panicking about my own sick Oranda :'C

I hope the rest of your fish will be fine!!

Katie,
Please try an oral antibiotic fish food first before you make the choice to put your guy down!  Sometimes it is just a baterial infection.  I've seen fish from dropsey live out a pretty normal life. Some the scales never go completely back to normal and they always have that rounder apearance but at least they can swim normally again. Smiley

If he's not eating the you can treat the water with an antibiotic such as tetracycline.
I would try treating him first.  The faster he is treated the better the outcome, rather than just to watch him suffer. Smiley
Sometimes it's better just to be doing something, then you know you did all you can. Otherwise you will always wonder "what if".
He should be removed to a hospital container with aeration. Smiley

katie: That's why I couldn't do that to my little Oranda either :'c It feels so weird to put the fish into the freezer... even if I know that fish can't really feel warm or cold. I just had to fish him up in the morning anyways... *sob*

Maybe Mindemae has a point? If all else fails, injections would be a perfect solution here! But not everyone have the nerves and the knowledge on how to do this |: Besides, the kind of syringes needed, and the antibiotics might be hard to get... But do try, do try! Smiley

Well, why didn't you just tell your boss you were ill? Undecided
It's none of his business why you have to leave.  You could have told him family emergency! Wink

Yes, do try medication first.
If he is in real suffering, I heard several drops of clove oil in a container of water work well for taking a fish to his last moments.  He just goes to sleep, and you can hold him as he lies in the water.
