Hi everyone, I'm new here.
I'm the proud fish-momma to 2 female bettas (Hailey and Abby), 1 male betta (Bravo), 1 calico fantail (Emmet), 1 red fantail (Jacob), and a black moor (Jasper). I currently have the 3 goldies in a 10 gal tank
with some snails. I know its ridiculously overcrowded, but I'm going to move them into a larger tank as soon as I can afford it
. In the meantime, they seem to be getting on pretty well, very happy playing in the waterfall from the filter.
How big of a tank do you guys think I should get?

It should be 10 gallons per goldfish so minimum 30 gallons but then you have to factor in the snails which I'm not sure how much room they need
I'd say not too much so maybe add just a bit more for them. I'm surprised your goldies haven't eatn the snails though I guess you have pretty big ones
For the meantime make sure you keep a close eye on water quality as your water could get quite bad with that many goldfish in such a small tank, this can be fixed with water changes for now but that is only a temporary solution. Also if you don't have one buy an airstone to go along with filter.
Now you have to get saving and post some photos so we can see all your fish

Hi Maddybelle, welcome to the forum, lots of good info here and good people too
I agree with Andrea, you'll need min 10 gal per goldfish and if you intend to add another couple and you are able to get it, then get a tank as big as possible. Surely you already browsed through some threads on here
the bigger the tank is, the easier is the maintenance.
Also keep a close eye on water quality like the Nitrogens : Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate ; and pH
Do you have a test kit? If not you can have the waterchemistry tested at the pet shop until you will be able to get one of your own. In this case I recommend the API MasterTestKit for freshwater.
I love your fishes names, so beautiful, lol, I am another one who names all the fishies,
And yes, please post pics
Hope you enjoy the forum

Don't you worry
The first months of my fish-keeping I kept my 3 fantails in an 8 gallon d: But I noticed quite quickly that it didn't really work like that, so I started saving up for an 83 gallon
(Even if I only had 6 fish later on...) Now I've got 9 goldfish in that tank of mine... I hope it'll work out d: I couldn't part with either of my babies <3 The ninth and unplanned one is a big moor I saw in the pet shop lately that someone had given away, so I just wanted to give him a nice home
So, if you feel like you'll want more goldfish later, it could be good to get something a little bit bigger! Like a 50-55 gallon or something
They're more beautiful the bigger they are, those tanks
Besides, you don't have to fill it to the limit, your fish would most likely love the extra space
Other than that, Andrea and Hanna covered
Try to get something to test the water with asap if you don't have it already
And I would also like to know what you're feeding your fish with c:

Thanks guys.
I'm going to take a water sample to the pet store this week to have it checked. All 3 of my fishies are still pretty small, about 2- 2.5 inches. They get along really well with the snails actually.
The little slimy things are all abou 1/2 inch in diameter. I'm saving up for a 39 gallon tank I saw on Craigslist. Hopefully they'll be okay until then.
I'll post pictures as soon as I can get them to stay still. They're eating out of my hand now!
Its awsome how they all have their own personalities!

Sounds just perfect!
When do you think you'll be able to afford the tank?
I was amazed in the same way about my first three goldfish as well! They were very social and snuggly
Me and my fiance loved cuddling with them
(and we still do of course!)

Hopefully I'll be able to get the new tank in the next 2 weeks or so. I saw a totally awsome 55 gallon tank with hood, stand, and filter for $150 today.
Maybe I'll sweet-talk my parents into getting that one for me.
I'd be able to get the redcap oranda and red/white fantail I've been eyeing at the petstore!

Sounds good,
. I said to my hubby yesterday how amazing those goldfish are. Never seen fishies with such great personalities, coming to you eating out of your hands, cuddling, snuggling. I am also sure they know what you are talking about. This morning they went nuts when hubby told them ' Mummy is coming with food" LOL

Mine follow me whenever I'm in the room. They do a little dance when they see me coming. Pretty talented little things.

Okay, so when I get the 55gal tank, what would be the absolute maximum number of goldies I could keep in there?
I do 20% water changes twice a week with my 10gal,
and would probably continue that schedule with the big tank. Also, which varieties would do best with my 2 fantails and black moor?

5 goldfish would be max
And I'd say pretty much anything goes as long as it's egg-shaped... You could get a few more telescope eyes or fantails to go with them, or maybe an oranda or two if you want
I keep fantails with moors, orandas and a pom pom goldfish
But beware, you need to make sure that your oranda will get a good variety of foods to avoid constipation
By the way, you'd do better by changing 50% at least in the tank, because 20% isn't removing too much of waste
