Thankyou for reading this, I'll tryto be quick.
My fantail goldfish Smokey is about 9 years old. I bought him when he was a baby and started him in a bowl then worked all the way up to my 65 gallon tank. He has been in this tank for a few years now. I will be honest and say I didnt know much about goldfish care and didnt clean the tank that often. Looking back I was amazed Smoke lived this long. He had a "brother" named Little Big Belly who pased away earlier this year. This was an eye opener to how bad the tank had gbecame. I noticed that Smokey was sick also when Big passed away and I have been trying to treat him ever since then but havent been able to heal him.
He has septacemia (spelling?) in his fins. I bought Maracyn-two and made a 10 gallon hospital tank for him. I went through a box of the medicine and it didnt seem to help much. The tank got became dirty very quickly as Smokey is only a little smaller than a softball. Baseball size if you're not counting his fins. He wasnt getting better so i went and bought another box and repeated the treatment. It seemed to be working a little so i put him back in his tank, and had made a partial water change. I kept on with the partial water changes for a couple months. After i made about 4, i started going back to waiting about 3-4 weeks to change the water. Well over a couple months smokey got worse. My placostamus?? died that was about 7 years old, and Smokey became extremely sick with septacemia throughout his fins. I had another regular goldfish in there with them and he seemed to be aggressive but never sick. Smokey also has what appears to be bulge eye, but he has looked that way since he was young so i thought it was normal. That also never healed when i treated him. There is also redness around his scales and on his tummy and side. The other smaller regular goldfish eats at Smokeys tail I think beleive because his fins seem to be missing a lot length. He also may have fin rot, I'm not sure.
So i went and bought him more medicine and set up the hospital tank again. Smokey was doing terrible and hardly swam. I was thinking he is gonna die soon. Well i treated him with API Pro Series Triple Sulfa. I went through the whole box and it seemed he was doing even worse! I am really at a loss of what to do. It seems i follow the directions and he gets worse. It started looking like his "skin" was peeling off and he looked slimy. He would barely move and not eat, just sit on the bottom and breathe. I'm running out of money to keep buying medicine, but I'm not trying to sacrifice his health. I know this wasnt the best idea, but i finally just cleaned out the big tank down to the glass and put completely fresh water and everything in it except the filter stuff. I took the little goldfish out who keeps giving Smokey problems and put him in the small tank. Now i have Smokey in the big tank but he was just sitting in the corner for 2 days not moving, just breathing. I figured he was gonna pass and i felt terrible for making him suffer. Well i get home from school tonight and now he is swimming around eating, BUT now he keeps swimming upside down. He usually stay towards the bottom of the tank but now he is swimming towards the top alot and i have never seen him go upside down this often and this long. When he was in good health, he would usually be scouring the bottom rocks for leftover food.
He seems to be floating a lot now. Is he dying slowly?
