artificial plants in goldfish pond

For the winter, will I hurt the goldfish by putting artificial plants near the bottom of the pond? This is strickly for hiding places for the fish.  A crane has found my pond and already had a meal of 5 fish !!!

Yea artificial plants are fine and shouldn't be a problem.

As far as the crane problem, put some chicken wire over the pond and make sure it cover all the edges. Keep the wires about 2 or 3 inches above the ground. Large birds ( such as cranes) do not like to walk over the chicken wires and so can't reach the fish easily. After about a month or so, they will probably find a new source of food and completely avoid your pond so you can remove the chicken wires then.

Im sorry to hear about your lost fish. Artificial plants are good, as long as they dont leak colour into the water. Some fake plants are notorious for that. Also, I agree that some form of loose mesh or wiring should be placed over the pond so that st*pid bird cant eat anymore of your lovely little fish.

Did you know that a fake crane statue put by your pond will keep other cranes away because cranes are very territorial and won't go near another place where they think another group of cranes may inhabit.
