Breeding Koi and Goldfish
« on: January 28, 2010, 10:35:25 PM »

Just out of idle curiosity, can you breed koi and goldfish together? Make koldfish or something? I just thought maybe because they're in the same family and some people might be interested in breeding for traits in the fish. Does anyone know???

Yes, goldfish and koi can be bred but their offspring will be sterile, meaning they will not be able to reproduce.

so they're like breeding horses with mules... Okay that makes sense then. are those offspring prone to any genetic mutations?

I guess the mule has some similarities to this. The reason why most mules are sterile is because of a chromosome mismatch from the parents (a horse has 64 chromosomes and a donkey has 62, so the mule only has 63 chromosomes).  It could be something similar that occurs with the offspring of a goldfish and koi, though i'm not certain.  Genetic mutations are often random and hard to predict.

What do you mean maybe in the future? Breeding goldfish and koi is a very real possibility today

Koi and goldfish can breed producing a hybrid.  The only ones I have seen were wild orange koi crossed with wild dark goldfish resulting in fish closely resembling goldfish.

I have seen the goldfish/koi cross and for that reason I have removed all the goldfish from my pond to prevent any accidental crosses.  They are so hideous looking that I don't think you would be able to get rid of them.  Google it and you will see what I mean.
