Constant gulping at surface.

My new goldfish has recently started gulping noisily at the surface at night...  sometimes leaving whole bubbles around the rim. There was also some erratic behaviour this afternoon...

It is a medium-large bowl, with large surface area, and a medium plant, so there has GOT to be enough oxygen supply... I just changed water (70%) and conditioned (of course).

Any clues what im doing wrong?

how big is the bowl? it is supposed to be one inch fish per gallon. Also, what type of goldfish is it? You should have lots of hiding places, and goldfish need companions, so get another goldfish, and a bigger tank. If you get a bigger tank you will need a filter, and if possible, lighting.

so you are suggesting that my fish bowl is too small and because of this my gold fish runs out of air!??? Undecided

 ???help my fishieeeeee!!  how can I get more air in the tank until I get a water pump and a larger tank!?

Rah,
You can change the water frequently, perhaps several times a week to replace the water in the fish bowl.  This will help replace the oxygen used up by the goldfish and get rid of the wastes produced the fish also.  Make sure you condition the new water first to remove the chlorine before putting it in the fish bowl. Also be sure the new water is about the same temperature as the water in the fish bowl or it will stress your fish, making it vulnerable to different diseases.  If you don't have any water conditioner you can leave the new water out in an open container for about 24 hours to allow the chlorine in the water to dissipate, making it safe for the goldfish.

You should NEVER EVER EVER! Keep a goldfish in a bowl! Even if it is large, there is no space for a filter which they desperately need, being such dirty fish, also, how big is your goldfish? And even if it IS small, it should grow quite large (around a foot in length) and thus it will need a MUCH larger tank. 20 gallons is the MINIMUM you should EVER keep a goldfish in, not to mention a bowl doesn't have enough surface area to absorb oxygen.
