where to buy goldfish

Hello does anyone out there know where I can purchase nice good quality goldfish in the area of san antonio?

Try looking for some at your local pet stores around where you live. They often take care of their fish better than most chain stores. As a last resort , you can try petsmart.

Hi eliza, welcome to the forum.

My advice where to buy is the following:

Have a look around in several petshops in your area. Have a close look at all tanks in there. Are they spotless clean, are the fish happy wigglers, does it smell nice in there? No dead or listless fish in the tanks? Have a look at the plants too, do they look ok or rotten. How is the "hardware" displayed? Nice and all in order? How is the staff: knowledgeable, clean?
Maybe you visit the same stores at different times too, can you see staff members caring for their stock and cleaning tanks?
All this helps to decide where you get your fish from.

Do you already have your tank set up and cycled? How big is it and how many goldies do you intend to keep?
Just for general info: 10 gal minimum for 1 fish. What kind of goldfish do you fancy

Thanks for the replies. I am building a 6ft x 4ft x 18inch deep pond. 135 gal. I plan on cycling it for 2 weeks before I purchase the fish. I plan on having only 3 preferably ryunkins or pearlscales.

I hope you're aware of the fact that especially egg-shaped goldfish (like ryukins and pearlscales) won't do well during the winter. It's quite common that they get swim bladder problems or even dropsy as the temperature drops in the fall/winter, so you should have a tank in doors to keep them in during the winter to keep your fish as healthy as they can be

Goldfish CAN quite easily survive winters, but it's proven that they thrive better in a warmer temp around 24-26 degrees Celsius

Why not a few of each kind? As in, a few commons, comets and shubunkins?

You don't have to over stock the pond, so you could go with maybe 8-10 fish or something as a final goal?

Start carefully though! Get at most 3-5 fish for starters so you won't overload the filter! It takes a while for it to mature so it can catch up with the waste
