My little fishy trio.

Sorry I have'nt been around in a while. Been going through some rough stuff and as far as my fishy trio is concerned nothing terribly eventfully has happened. My little trio is still doing quite well and seem to be very healthy...but "little" is the operative word. I don't think these guys have gotten any bigger lately, they just seem to stay the same size. I'm a smidge worried they may be stunted. How do I know if they are?
Here's some pics of the kids.

I don't know if there is any way to tell if they are stunted for sure. It is my personal belief (based on my own fish) that the smaller the accommodations the slower they will grow and the smaller they will stay. I wouldn't go so far as to call my small ones "stunted" though and I'm hopefully they'll still catch up. I think the orange one does look bigger, you don't think so?

Maybe a little bigger, and their tails and whatnot have grown longer, but I can tell you one thing....they're definately fatter. XD I mean, they don't look unhealthy to you do they?

No, they look great now. Have you read the research Skwishee put together on single-tail fish? They really need a tremendous amount of space and I'm sure the sooner they get it the healthier they'll be.

Yeah I know they need a bigger tank, but unfortunately I'm strapped for cash at the moment cause I need alot of dental work done. :/

GoldFishNoob! I was wondering where you'd gotten too
I think the fish look bigger since I last saw them, but I can understand your concern. They seem healthy too
Best of luck with the dental work, maybe you could put up a wanted adverts in places, for a free or cheap bigger fish tank?

I've been wondering when is a good time to replace my filter media, or should I do it at all? Cause all 3 ( Sponge, carbon and cork-like media) are looking rather gnarly and the carbon packet has become almost like it's own media source in a way.

Sponges should be rinsed in tank water every couple weeks. I rarely replace bio media, maybe add a little bit every few months.

I've not replaced any of the media *apart from the carbon* in my internal filter and that's been fine for almost 7 months now
It is a funky brown colour and slightly squished from being in the filter, but it's fine, I just give it a rinse every now and then in old tank water.
Unless the bio media is physically falling apart, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
When you do find it is appropriate to change the media, only change half of a sponge at a time, this way you won't get a mini cycle.

Yeah I rinse my filter media in old tank water and ring the sponge out every other gravel cleaning.

I'm still baffled by Curlies transformation. Can I even still call him a sarasa comet? lol He does'nt look like the same fish. Not that I'm complaining, he is very pretty now. I love his flowy fins and tail......also when I look at the old pic up top, I realize how far they've come from being, small, poorly looking faire fish. And poor Moe.
*sad reminising sigh.* I would have loved to have seen him now.

Indeed. He progressively lost his orange color over 2-3 months until he's now completely white. See. Here's the progression. It's bizzare, but I think it's normal....or so I've heard. He seems otherwhise really healthy. Where as Bob, my little comet with the orange spot on his head, the orange is actually spreading over his eye and across his back.

Also, when I look up pictures of common goldfish, they look nothing like Larry....he has the body shape of a common but his fins are way too long and flowy and the color fades to clear on the edges. Could he be a hybrid or something? O.o

Aww I was going to ask about Curlies spot if he still had it! I guess not
It's funny you say that about Larry, I was sat looking at Lucky earlier thinking the SAME thing! XD
Lucky's tail is quite long and beautiful, not as long as a comets, but not as short as a commons. Hmmm interesting....
Also I know how you must feel about Moe
I look at the bigger tank and only wish Star was here to enjoy it...
Oh one other thing I came across the other day, not sure how practical this is for you, but I have recently come across the idea of people using 50 gallon rubbermaid tubs as tanks? They may need some support, like a wooden frame or something, if they bow when filled with water, but may be cheaper than a tank? I have no idea on the prices and I'm not entirely sure what a rubbermaid tub is, but thought I would mention it
[Edit]
Oh! One other thing, I also saw while I was out today, plastic boxes, like 110 litre plastic boxes being sold for like £9.99, again you'd have to look into how possible it would be to use such an item as a tank (I'm not sure on it myself) but it could be another option for you to consider hun
They seem to be quite cheap here, so maybe they're cheap where you are?

OH really? We don't have any rubbermaids here
But I saw the awesome 110 litre storage boxes and thought they'd make useful quarantine tanks or temporary homes

I've seen big rubbermade tubs and the like at OSH, but I also wondered how they would fair as substitute tanks. Don't remember the prices though. If it was'nt raining I could easy cruise down there and take another peak. XD Problem is most of them are'nt see through or a opaque in color and I like to see my fishies at all angles.

If they're opaque, it would be like having a mini indoor pond

Wow, very interesting. I had no idea goldfish could completely lose their color like that. O.O
Love the "no fishing" sign by the way.
