coffee mug as planter

I'm getting ready to add a few new items to my tank. My honey just bought a really neat cave for my babies to swim in and I'm getting a powerful airstone for the 60 gallon tomorrow (I never knew I needed one, thanks for letting me know) and I'd like to get a few live plants to go with my fake ones. I think the plants look really cute potted in a tera cotta pot, but I was wondering can I use a regular navy blue coffee mug (Fiesta Ware). Of course I would boil it to remove whatever dishwasher and coffee reside that may be on it. I had read somewhere that you shouldn't use blue, green or red cups, but I thought I would run it past all of you, since I really rely on all of your advise.

Teetsy, how lovely you re decorate your tank, but I really DON"T KNOW about using a coffe mug. I wish I would. Sorry for that.
I can imagine that it would look nice, but... hopefully sbdy else may know...
But terracotta sure is very nice, I've got one by myself and my watermonkeys ate the anubias of it.

I don't know anything about this either
Sorry!!
However, it's always, always better to err on the safe side if there's something you're not sure about when it comes to putting new decorations in your tank! Maybe you should really just go with the terracotta pots?

Interesting thing about coffee mugs - that is depending on the origin of them. I had many from local dollar stores that every time I would go to reheat the beverage that was in them, they'd get so hot in a matter of seconds in the nuke so I asked around and found out that the particular ones I had contained large amounts of lead in the paint that was applied in manufacturing. So in my case, these mugs would not be safe. However, I cannot say the same with high quality glassware as I honestly don't know

Exactly! My problem is that they keep making these adorable designs! xD Just this summer I had to buy another four huge cups just because of the cute colors
We call them flower pots, because they ARE huge
