DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST GOLDFISH YOU EVER OWNED?
« on: January 30, 2010, 07:57:08 PM »

Hello,
I remember my first goldfish I ever owned.  I was visiting my grandmother when I was 4 years old and when she brought me home, there on the kitchen table was a suprise under a towel for me!
I pulled off that towel quick and there sat a bowl with 2 common goldfish in it.  One was orange which I promptly named Polly and the other was a calico colored which I named Pete. I think Pete and Polly only lived for a year or two, but from that time on I was hooked!  I've never gone a day since without a goldfish in my life!

I had recieved a beta from a friend. she couldnt take care of it, so I said I'd look after him. I called him Quesadilla, but the poor little guy didnt make it past his first month of being brought home... I wanted a fish and so far Ive had six: Quesadilla, Enchilada (common GF), Gimpy (Fantail w/ one black eye), Morris (Calico fantail), Cheeky (Fantail) and my Pride and Joy SONORUS! Grin

How long have you had Sonorus?

Through the years I have tried to improve the lives of my goldfish from that simple bowl I first had.
It's funny how I graduated from the bowl to a 2 1/2 gallon tank, which housed a common goldfish for several years...(poor thing)...from there I went to a 10 gallon with filtration and air pump. Next was a 15 gallon tank, which I recently gave to my sister for her turtle.  Then it was to a 29 gallon, but I didn't like it as it was too high so I gave that to my sister for her tree frogs.  Then I bought a 16 gallon bow front with stand at a yard sale.  I really like it but it is too small.  Between all those tanks I put in two different ponds outside. LOL!  I like to keep busy!
My sister wants my 16 gallon tank for her fish.  I bought a 55 gallon with stand and I love it, so my pond fish could come inside for the winter!  Next I purchased a 30 gallon with stand so I could house a couple of Orandas...whew!  What is next?
I am thinking of upgrading the 55 gallon to a 75.  We'll see........

The first two goldfish we got were in a 30 gallon tank along with some black mollies, platys and various bottom feeding fish and algae eaters. One of those two grew so fast! And he had a little bit of headgrowth, with my mom didn't like too much, but she still loved those fish (: We still have the second one! (Along with a white fantail with a red dot on his head, and another fantail, golden) Mom loves those normal golden ones with long, long fins like the one  she has now! His fins are longer than his body! The first one who died after a couple of years, around 5-6, had shorter body and shorter fins...

Then I got my very first OWN goldfish last year's birthday when I turned 18, three beautiful and special fantails (: A whole white one with red 'eyelids', a calico one, and a normal red one with white belly Wink So they live in that biOrb as of now, they're still so small <3 And they've got lots of pretty pebbles and plants (that grow like crazy!). I intend to keep them forever, and get a bigger tank for them (And some black moors, my fiance loves them) as they grow up (:

My first two fish were a black moor called Benji and a white fantail called cashfish (later changed to fatty Tongue).
I had them in probably a 10L tank with no filter as I knew no better. Later this broke (luckily when I was cleaning out the tank and no fish were in there). So I brought them a new tank which was actually a guinea pig/hamster tank <_< Still with no filter.
Cashfish developed swim bladder problems and Benji had an incredibly small mouth and could barely eat. But suprisingly they lived for over a year. I still had Cashfish when I got my latest fish sunshine. But I have had 2 others in between there (Gary and Rocky).
I must say I've come along way from there, it has been about 7 years and I have learnt about cycling, oxygen needs, filters, food etc.

I honestly don't like to think about my first goldie because I knew so little about taking care of them and feel like I was a bad fishie parent. Sad  No airstone, no water conditioner, in a bowl, etc.  I did love my fishie, but neither I nor the people around me knew any better.
I was about 10 and I won Swimmy at a fair.  Swimmy lived about two months in the bowl with myself and my mother helping to take care of him.  I still remember coming home from school and finding him dead and being so sad.  He had a burial in the pond across the street from our house.  It took me this long (I'll be 30 at the end of this week) to recover from being terrified my pet fish will die and take the chance to adopt a finned friend again.  Now I know how to take care of my little pet and never want to be without goldfish again!

Nicole:: That's a touching story :'c How terrible :'c
I, myself, learned a whole lot of new things during these months I've had my current goldfish! Before I had no idea how much water they needed, I was counting it as with tropicals, one cm of fish needs 1 liter of water. And noticed quite early that it wasn't gonna work out keeping 3 fish in an 8 gallon tank! D: Especially with such weak filtration... but we all learn from out mistakes! And I'm sure your goldfish are very happy now! (:

It is a touching story, indeed.
We never had goldies before, this is the first time and remarkable the amount of things you can learn having them.
Also realizing that when you start off how much wrong info you can get.
I remember Hump and Heps first days.
We first bought an aquarium with filter in its cover but 5 l !!! We were told 2 goldfish will be fine.
And it was higher than wide, like a octagon cylinder.
We had it set up for a week, then we went back to the petshop and bought our fishies. They seemed to be fine, but then after having them for 3 days the water was really dirty, yucky. I did a partial waterchange.
I was alarmed, said to myself, sth is not right, so I jumped on the net and found YOU all. And all that info.
So next day we bought our AquaOne, I set it up, left it for a few days and made the best for Hump and Hep in this small tank. Poor buggers they could see the new world through the glass, wanted to swim through but could't.
I think they had flat noses during those days.

How happy they have been when we moved them into their bigger home!

My G o d! D: (You know that the forum would change this word into "yoda"...)
No, seriously, the people at the pet shops NEED TO learn something about fish keeping in general. I'm getting more and more pissed at them. It happens all the time that I hear about them trying to sell a 10 liter bowl to keep a goldfish in saying that it'll be fine.
Did I tell you about the time I bought the aquarium salt and I asked in the shop what's wrong with my fish when they're hovering by the surface? Well, the fucking smart answer was "Uuh. They're dead?". I honestly felt like I wanted to teach 'er a lesson right there about that kind of crap.

I think that if you have problems with your fish, or any animal, the pet shop workers SHOULD by all means be able to help!

Sorry about the offtopic answer :C

Nossie, I agree with you and this is a bit off topic too, but I am positive that you agree with this now too:

... some retailers would sell you cancer to make some money...
and, no, you didn't tell me about your experience when you bought the salt

Back to the topic, I'll attach some pics of the first tank, and by the way, the cardboard box it was in showed the tank and 4 (!) goldfish on it. I am glad that our common sense told us that sth was wrong keeping them in 5 l
And now they are sooooo sweet and happy little fishies

My tank is that shape now (though 22L and only has one fish in it) but still Sad I knew no better and it was so much bigger than the one I replaced it with, which the people at the fish shop, not a pet shop but a specific fish shop, said would be fine.
Sunshine needs a new tank but I'm a poor university student with no job Sad
You should see how many fish they have on the box of the tank, no joke about 15!!!!

But yes, point is I agreee with you both. The shop I get my fish supplies from is just a fish shop and they do know their stuff. But they just happen to only want to share it with you if you ask and aks and ask! They should be the ones asking and answering.
For example, they have crabs for sale labelled as freshwater crabs. I was interesting in buying one so I did all this research about them and turns out that specific crab lives in brackish water. So though it can live in fresh water it is not ideal and will result in a shortened life for the crab which they suffer in probably. They told me yes it was brackish when I asked, but I still don't understand why they labeled it as fresh water then!! Is it to make them more appealing as it seems easier so therefore they get more sales? I don't know.
Bit off topic I guess, it just annoys me because they are so great but also so lacking!

Andrea: Been there, doing that.  We have a 38-gallon that we're not using.  Where about do you live?  If it's close enough, maybe we could work something out.
Hanna: I love your goldies!  I'm a huge fan of the common, comet, and shubunkin varieties (I just love the color and the shape!).  It's nice to see that someone likes "long" goldfish as well!

Andrea: Lately I rather go to the pet shop that's more specialized in fish-keeping, since the guy there seems to know what he's talking about! (and his goldfish are always so beautiful and perky!) I just asked about a plant last time I was there and he told me so many good things about it (and it's relatives)! Nice to see that at least someone cares, but it makes me a bit sad that this better shop is so much smaller and in a more "hid-away" part of the town, if you know what I mean.

Actually, on the box of my biOrb there are 3 little goldfish, BUT two are orandas (young ones with little headgrowth) and one telescope. They say in the user's manual that you should NOT keep orandas there since they grow too big. How come they sell this aquarium in an 8 gallon size saying that it's for 3 goldfish if they still somewhere along the way calculated that an oranda would grow too big? 3 grown fantails don't fit in there either! D: *rant*

Hah, well, glad I learned something from all this (: And that I found something so great to spend my time on/with! I loved goldfish and fish in general all my life, but it hasn't been until this last year that I seriously thought about getting some of my own!

It also upsets me, after I/we learned so much about our goldies, that you still can see goldfish kept in a plain bowl....even on this site in the gallery photos.... Angry

Small shops, specialized ones, they usually are family owned and handed over from generation to generation, the kids we can say grew up in the fish shop and learned the right things, etc. And yes, those shops are small and narrow, some maybe with an extension and they are away from the big shopping areas. Most people there know what they are talking about.

But in the big modern ones they employ people to be there and sell, people with no professional knowledge... especially if you go to the pet department at Big-W or K-mart.

Well, what we discussed here sounds to be a bit off topic too, but what do you think, I declare it as matching this topic, because it is part of our experience we had getting our first goldfish  Wink

Nicole: NSW, Australia. An hour or so outside of Sydney.

It makes me sad even seeing fighting fish in those little bowls, even though they can actually survive in them. But it just seems so cruel, they don't get to swim around:( They always look so much happier in prober tanks.

Andrea, there is a PetStock Animal Supplies in Penrith and Chatswood.
Our one in Kawana does rent out fish tanks up to 900 l and more.
If those 2 shops are not too far away from your place maybe you like to go there and just have an informative look ?  ....just an idea....

I remember the first fish I ever got! Went to a friends for tea and her mum took her to get some fish and I bought one with my pocket money my mum and dad were very shocked and dad had to rich out next day and get a tank! Lol! She was called silky we then got her a friend called diamond! Unfortunately they got a fungus in the tank diamond got it first and became furry we isolated her in a fish bowl and she got better but changed from gold to black, silky got it afterwards but she didn't make it! Sad I had Diamond for at roughly 3 years until we got another infection in the tank that whipped out the whole tank!

Wow, resurrecting an old thread...my first was Michael-Quincy, a red oranda with black-tipped fins. I put him into a uncycled 10 gallon tank where he promptly got fin-rot and ich. Lived about a week the poor dear. Then I got serious, bought Rowan and he has been in perfect health the past 18 months (along with his 11 siblings...).

Lol Cheri, nice going.  Wink It's so sad that your first fish didn't make it...mine didn't either.

Funny how the "feeder" fish seem to be a common first goldfish.  Mine was as well.  This is kind of a sad story.

I got him at a fair when I was probably 7.  I remember wanting to play the "goldfish toss" game where you throw the pingpong balls into a glass jar while standing behind the line.  I  begged my mom to play it but she said our cats would eat the fish if I won one.  Somehow or another I ended up playing the game (probably while she was away) and winning a little feeder fish!  He was in about a pint of water and I took him home against my parents' better judgement.  He lived a whole week on peas (probably about 3 peas a night) in that same container until I was able to go to the store with my parents to buy goldfish food and a bowl for him.  The night we got home I raced to his side with the new "house" for him only to find him dead!  Sad  I'm surprised he made it as long as he did.  Somehow I ended up buying 2 more and putting them in that same bowl, only to wonder why they all died after a few months.  I then began keeping bettas, which lasted much longer in the bowl instead of the goldfish. (Funny how that works.)

Years later I ended up with a 10 gallon tank and got a large fantail goldfish (large as in 3-4 inches long).  I named her Penelope and plopped her in the uncycled tank.  Somehow she lived through a tank without a filter (miracle!) and once a month water changes.  I did eventually get a filter for her but made a fatal mistake (not the first) and added some tropical guppies (the little brats) to the water.  They picked on her and polluted the water more for her to be able to stand.  She died from nitrite poisoning.  I cried, how I cried, for 3 days straight!  That little girl had simply wiggled her way into my heart.  Never knew that one could become so attached to a scaly little pet.  I wish I'd known about this forum at the time...y'all would probably have helped me save her.

I have fortunately learned much since then, and become officially addicted to goldfish keeping!

That is a pretty sad story :C (Or three)
I was lucky to simply not get any goldfish until we had the 25 gallon available, and even more lucky that I did find this forum when I tried my luck with goldfish the first time on my very own!

But time flies. I've had the 83 gal for one and a half year now o_o

For me my story of my first goldfish starts with a fair we have twice a year and Id always set asside $5 for each. I would go to the fish game at the end of our time at the fair and win one. After winning 7 goldfish which lasted a max of 9 months over 3 years. I won a fish which lived 3 weeks in a little vase. So I decided why not put them in my empty ten gallon. My sister refuesed to put her's in so I just put in the other 2. Then they died of chlorine poisoning. My sister's fish eveuntully died right before I got Orbitz. But it doesn't end there. Orbitz's tank was uncycled and filterless and she was suffering day by day. So I bought a filter and thats when I joined the forum.
