Lucky and Star of course were my first goldfish  Smiley

I wish they wouldn't give out goldfish as prizes at fairs Sad
I know if the fair hadn't of done so and the children I work with hadn't of left Lucky and Star behind, I would never have begun this crazy fish keeping adventure. But even so, it would have been better if the fish simply hadn't been given out to begin with.

I remember one fair, where they were giving out carrot shaped goldfish as a prize Wink Now that is surely a much cheaper option for the stall owner, as I often wonder how they take care of so many fish.

I was 5 years old when my parents gave me a small fish tank with a goldfish as the first pet of my very own. Apparently about a year later when I was at school my 4year old brother climbed up and got into the tank and accidently squished the poor thing trying to catch it. Mum panicked and rushed to the pet shop to replace it with an identical one (probably just as well as I wouldve been so upset and wouldve killed my brother lol). She only admitted to what happened years later.

That is both sad and funny at the same time! Considering I didn't know that much before I started on this forum ( and I'm still learning) I always did well with fish! I remember winning two at a fair and I had them years, to the shock and horror of my mum! Lol!

My mum wasn't there I was 16 and at a fair with a friend! To be honest I was trying to win a teddy! Lol! But I didn't win and was given a fish and I though I can't leave him on his own so I played 2 more times to get him a friend and a bow! I knew the bowl wasn't really good for them but they were small and I didn't have a tank at the time, as I had gotten rid of the tank when I had lost my last fish and hadn't had any in a while, so I though it would at least be something to put them in until I got a tank! I got them a proper tank within the week and they grew at lasted a while! Although one didn't look all that good when I got them, he got better and ended up bigger than the other one!  Grin

Well actually they wernt I bought my first fish when I was six and got her a friend bit they got a fungus in the tank after about 6 months. The my first fish died but the second lasted about 3-4 years until I got an infection that wiped out the whole tank! I had three by that point, would have been four in the tank at that point but my dad accidentally killed one when we were syphoning of the water for a water change it got caught on the end of the syphon.  Cry I then had 2 fantails who last 2 years then I got Those two when I was 16, and then got Worf two years ago he killed two fish I had put in the tank then a third died after a thunderstorm, got him a bigger tank got some friends and you all pretty much know the rest! I always took their care relatively seriously but never really understood how to look after them properly until now!  Smiley

They had little black bits for eyes, very amusing vegetables......

I never considered Lucky being shaped like a carrot before XD lol

Yes, I got a goldfish from a fair when I was about 5, and he lived in an unfiltered, untreated tank. the water was changed when it got too green. That's how we did things back then...little blackie lived for nearly 20 years like that...how I just don't know Huh

Oh wow 20 years?! I think goldfish are just very adaptable creatures and good at surviving. Which may be why many people believe they can be kept in small tanks and bowls, I imagine. How big was he Scrivens?

Ok people here my story,in 2008 about my first goldfish dory was in  a container for 2 mouths.My friend won her at the fair. Then I got a 5 gallon hexagon. Then 2009 I got a 65 gallon that had 2 other fish. Any way she is still alive she she is 4 years old with 4 other friends who are Waffles and Flounder 2 years old,and Sadie and Sally 7 mouths old.

My first goldfish was also a fair fish.  We kept it in one of those big iced tea dispensers that had a little button and spout at the bottom to let the liquid out.  That made changing the water a breeze.  I was 10 and didn't know how to take care of fish, so our little guy died a few months later of unknown causes.  I came home to an empty house after school one day (I was a latchkey kid) and was so scared and sad when I saw Swimmy dead.  Even though we gave him a water burial in the pond near our house, I was still pretty traumatized.  I couldn't go near fishtanks for a few years after and had a phobia of dead fish well into my 20s.  I decided to overcome it when I was an adult by getting some goldfish of my own and taking care of them.  It was the best decision I ever made.
