Dropsy?

 Poor Starburst was laying on the bottom of the tank. I noticed that her mouth is indented on one side, then I noticed that her scales are poking out on her side. She is such a lovely fish, & I need some help in what to do. I am getting ready to put her in quaretine tank, & try to find some emds to give her, but she needs help quick. If any one can help me out would be great. 37 gallon ph 7 nitrates & nitrites are 0 everything is good as far as water quality. I took pics the best I could seeing how she is a smaller fish.

Strange that your nitrate is at 0. Is your aquarium done cycling? What's the ammonia reading? Dropsy has many causes including poor water conditions, bacterial, parasitic and viral infections.

I would move the goldfish to a quarantine tank and slowly raise the temperature to around 78F - 80F if you have an aquarium heater .

Add about 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt per 10 gallon of water ( dissolve it first in a glass of water before adding it to the isolation tank). The Epsom salt sometimes will help with in reducing the pineconing and swelling.

If you have antibiotic fish food on hand, feed it to the goldfish if it's still eating. You can also add antibiotics like Maracyn plus  or  a combination of maracyn 1 & 2 together into the water.

Normally you wouldn't have access to viral medications so this treatment sometimes will help if it's bacteria related.

If I were you, I'd try finding some Maracyn 2, I've a friend who has successfully treated dropsy with it. Sadly, it's not available where I live, so I just have to try with some anti-bacterial medicine and Epsom salts.

Good luck!! I do hope she'll make it!! Dropsy is so hard to treat...

What is the Ammonia reading ? Hard to believe nitrates are 0.  Stress Coat is gentle and has aloe in it that may help with the scale. Have the other tank mates bullied her or are there sharp edges within the tank she may have run into ?

 The ammonia is 0. Yes the tank is finished cycling it is one of my 37 gallon tanks, it has finished cycling for about a month now. Thank goodness, my 60 just finished last week. I am glad I done everything right then, I got the Maracyn 2, & epsom salt, & added those, in process of raising the temp. Starburst is already showing signs of feeling better, but she still has a long way to recover. Thank you so much, I don't think I could stand to loose any more fish. I have had some minor problems with Sunshine, & Squishy,but I caught that very soon. I am not sure about Starburst mouth, it was fine until she became sick, the only fish with her was Patch. They have been together for a long time, they both came from the same place, & were shipped together as well. The bullies are Sunshine & Squishy, they seem to pick on the other fish, but they are in my 60. Thanks so much on the help & reasurance that I was doing right. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dropsy is a tricky disease to treat, and it can take up to a month before the swelling goes away completely, so you need to be patient and take good care of the fish. Reading your update made me pretty sure that she'll be just fine in time Smiley

Lost Starburst this morning, have been dreeding coming on here today, to tell she past this morning. I didn't see any signs of this illness at all she was fine, & then sick. RIP Starburst. I am guessing it was in the area of bactrial, the water quality has been good, I check it regular, & do water changes. I have no clue, just have to keep trying, & make sure Patch doesn't get sick.

At least dropsy isn't contagious. But it is horrible that it just shows up like that, one isn't ready once it happens Undecided

looks like the pineconing would have been hard to notice viewing the fish by looking thru the front of the glass, the only way you can get a good view of the problem is looking down on the tank and fish, something I think we should all do as often as possible. You can spot it from the side (once you've seen it a few times... argh.), but it's usually too late even though just a few scales are protruding :'/
