plants and stress?

ok so I just started out with 4 fancy goldfish.  They were doing just fine until day 3 I received the silk type aquarium plants in the mail.  I rinsed them in warm water several times, then gently decorated the tank as to not stress out the fish.  But then, the rest of the day, my poor fish seemed listless, kinda stressed out and up in the corner away from the plants the whole day and night!  They seem to be avoiding the plants and no longer exploring the tank!  What's happening?  Anyone know?  I worked in a tropical fish store all through out my college years so I feel like I know what I'm doing and I never have any problems keeping tropical fish varieties but every time I want to have a tank with fancy goldfish they never survive!  Help!  My 5 year old loves these guys I really love them too!

right... you have 4 goldfishes in a 12 G tank = overstocked = problems (if not now then in the nearest future)
secondly, it's not clear with what water you've rinsed the plants? is it tap water? or was it dechlorinated water? if no, did you add some water conditioner into the tank or somehow dechlorinated the plants after the water rinsing?
thirdly what are the water parameters (Ammonia, Nitrites & Nitrates, as well pH)? Is the tank cycled?
filtration if any?
