New member and gold fish lover :-)

Hello all,
I have come across this site due to a sick goldfish that has body fungus. Sad

I have kept tropical fish for over 10 yrs but never goldies. So I have been researching meds for this butterfly koi. Are the med requirements different for goldies than other tropical fish? I didnt see a forum for 'welcoming' to the site so I am posting here and hope its in the right place?
Here is a few photos of my tank w/ shunbukins and butterfly koi. :-) I currently have a 225g tropical fish tank, 29g betta tank but wanted to mainly focus on my new gold fish, which I love. Grin

Tank info: 55g
sand bottom
no heater atm, but will use it in the cooler months.
penn plex 700 cannister filter
hang on back, aqua clear 700.
water changes: 30% 2x's a week or more if needed. ( they are such big poopers!)
assorted air tubes.
fish: 6 shubunkins ( calico) I have no idea on the gender id's.
3 butterfly koi.
New fish largest at the moment is about 4 inches or so.
Future plans... working on a koi pond that will be up and running in the springtime.
I will enjoy reading through the forums to learn what i can on these gorgeous and fun fish! Grin

Welcome to the forum! Cheesy

And about the meds, goldfish get the same diseases as any fish do, so you treat it the same way

Just find a good medication for the infection in question, and treat it the way you'd treat your tropicals

I was wondering, is a butterfly koi the same as koi? Or is it some smaller type?

Butterfly Koi ( or as they tell me) Have slightly different fin shapes. It seems that the lower fins both pectoral and pelvic are longer and more 'showy'. Other than that, Im not sure of the difference. Thanks for the advice on treatment with these fish. Im going to isolate her in a hospital tank and try using some Pima FIx or methylene blue and see what happens. I will continue to treat the whole tank with the Maroxy and hope to catch it before it spreads to the other fish which Im thinking its going to happen anyway.. I believe the body fungus is very contagious. Undecided

That is one AWESOME tank setup! I like the dragon airstones. Welcome to the forum- I'm sure you'll find a lot here. I'm not on much these days because I have a new baby to take care of, but there are a lot of great people who can answer any questions or concerns you may have, however small or large.

Hi Nicole and thank u so much for the welcome! The dragon set up was my Husbands idea. He had to have control of at least one of our tanks lol.. but in the end, I actually like it too. Wink

It seems like a very nice forum here and Im sure I will enjoy spending time in between working and other things. Like taking care of the tanks haha.. congratulations on your new baby! :-)

Unfortunately my lil one didnt make it. Sad

I set up the hospital tank added filter, air hose, API Fungus Cure and put her in. She swam a bit and then went into shock. Came out of it for awhile.. she was such a fighter. Lasted all evening and this morning I found her dead. Cry

The fungus was very pillowy around the top part of her gills and it was all over her fins and parts of her body. I treated her and the big tank for 5 days before moving her. I'm wondering now if I had just left her in the big tank that maybe she would've made it. Im afraid this is contagious and have to keep treating the big tank and looking for signs of it on any of the others. They are fine for now.. keeping my fingers crossed. RIP Manderin..... U were a beauty.

I'm really sorry for your loss :C
But if nothing shows on your other fish, they're probably not even in danger of being infected yet. But keep treating and observing, I guess
