I've moved to tropical but want to know something about this filter if anyone has one. So I was thinking about getting a fluval u2 filter to replace my marina s15 HOB filter, would this be a good idea? has anyone got a U version filter that you can say is good, as with it being rated for a 30gal and my tank only being 15 would it be a good upgrade once i've let it run alongside my other filter for a few months? any advice and thoughts on this would be helpfull. Also do you have to use the carbon cartridges? our could I just use extra filter wool as I though carbon is only useful when removing medicaton. Any advice and thoughts on this would be helpfull thanks.

I have a u4; good for filtration; but you need additional oxygenation with these filters

the carbon is for water clarification..so you can just use the foam and bio-blocks if you prefer; this is how I have mine set up

Ok thanks, and I thought the top setting on the filter oxygenated the water as I only have my air stones on during the day as the pump is loud and only a few feet from my head. and I would just use 2 foam pads on each side instead of the carbon as I have non in the filter I have now and the water is crystal.

you can use a venturi to the top outlet....but I haven't found that particularly good; I use a power fan in conjunction with my fluval to break the water surface

you should run the filter for 24-hours a day, no exceptions

also on a scale of 1-10 1 being loudest and 10 being quiet how quiet would you say it is as my filter when i get it up right is about a 7 and just a buzzing noise and i can just handle that without thinking about throwing it out the window.

If you really have to turn off your air pump, do it during the day, when plants are partly producing oxygen. During nights they're using it.

I found that if I mounted the air pump at the right level; either significantly below or above the tank, then the buzz was reduced considerably...it took me a great deal of experimentation...also ptting the pump on an (acoustically) absorbent surface such as a rubber mat helps Grin
