As some of you might already know I recently inherited (sort of, long story) a tank with some goldfish. The filter is rather loud in my opinion and all I can think is that if I think it's loud how loud must it be for the fish? Is that st*pid? Does noise bother them? Anyway, I'm interested in getting a quieter filter but since I'm new to all this I don't know if that's even possible.

The current filter is a Whisper filter (Tetra) for tanks 20-40 gallons. It hangs over the side of the tank. The cover on the tank is one of those flip top types. To be clear, it's not the splashing water that's loud. That sound doesn't bother me at all. It's the motor or whatever you call it. Impeller maybe? I've tried to do a little research. I don't know how long filters are supposed to last. This one is about seven years old I think.

Basically I'm wondering what a good quiet filter would be. Something similar to what I have I guess just to keep things simple. I'm in the United States. The nearest pet store to me is a Petsmart. Or should I not get a new filter for an established tank? Would that be bad for the fish?

If you get a new filter Zana, be sure to take the media from the current filter to put in it (as this media will have all the good bacteria on it)

When I say media, I refer to the white sponges inside the filter, those are the ones the bacteria grown on

Depending on how big the filter is, you can always add new media in as well, if it will fit, but having the old media in there will mean the tank won't have to cycle
