Any thoughts
« on: March 05, 2012, 12:32:44 PM »

My smaller Ryukin injured himself  a few weeks back and it has left him with an unsightly lump; not a problem in itself BUT he keeps on injuring it, this has left him extremely stressed....today I caught him "Dive-bombing" the bottom og the tank.....

I've moved him to a 25 gallon hospital tank, added a general tonic and covered the tank with a blanket to keep it dark. I've also raised the temperature.

Any thoughts on what else I might do for the poor little blighter???

The only other thing I like to do with open wounds is dab it once with hydrogen peroxide but this is probably unnessasary if the wound is healing nicely.

Does the lump has any cut or bruises on the skin that could allow the area to become infected? I would keep an eye on the area for redness or other signs of a bacterial infection.

Most healthy fish with a minor bruise or cut can heal on its own if you maintain excellent water quality, with nitrate ideally very low. You can get low nitrate if you increase the frequency of the water changes and vacumm the gravel well. Raising  the temperature should help to boost its immune system so it can fight off any infection.

Oh dear. Are you sure it's an injury? It looks like...something. I'm not home, I don't have my book but it looks like something.

Are they open like ulcers? Carp pox is what I was thinking, this pic shows small lumps but I have personally seen a fantail with much larger lumps. It is caused by a virus. Described as white waxy lumps??? No cure. I do hope it is just an injury.

Ok. Doing research. Could it be an abcess? Would fit with the injury theory. Found some similar-looking pics online. Supposed to treat with antibiotics. Medicated food is supposed to work. If you were closer I'd give you some....

I think it looks more like an abscess. Maybe if you treated him for an abscess and see what happens because if it is a tumour obviously it won't work but there is nothing you can do for a tumour except remove it!
