Help need - fish out of water

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help.

We have had Zig and Zag for about 4 years now and have been problem free until Thursday of this week.

When we woke up on Thursday morning some how Zag had managed to jump out of the tank and onto the living room floor, we are not quite sure how as the lid was on the tank. He had been on the floor for about 5.5 hours but when I went to pick him up he showed signs of movement, so I put him into a tupperware container and his gills startred to open. He was swimming upside down and floating on his side but I spent time with him trying to help him breathe and to stabilise his swimming. After about half hour he was swimming around unaided and started to eat some food whilst I was aerating his temporary home through a straw.

We re-introduced him to Zig in the tank and he seems okay but very docile, he occassionally swims about but seems to be sleeping on the bottom of the tank more than he used to and does not come to the top of the tank for his food. Is there anything else we can do or do we have to play a waiting game? We are worried that Zig will attack him also.

Any advice please......

p.s. we both feel so guilty that he had managed to get out of the tank in the first place whilst being confused at how he managed to do so Sad

Sounds like he just needs a bit of time to recover from his trauma...goldfish are well-known "jumpers"

I would say keep doing what you're doing. Keep the water quality perfect and help him to eat nutritious food like tubifex and peas. Divide the tank with plastic "egg crate" (in the lighting department of hardware store) if your other fish picks on him.

Thanks, do the peas need to be thawed and shelled???

Yes. Thawed, shelled and cut or mushed into mouth-sized piececs.

I've heard sometimes that their fins might die from being dried out...so be prepared for that. Hope it goes well, I love the names.

Unfortunately Zag did not make it, we woke up this morning to find him floating in the tank.

He's now gone to that great bigh fish tank in the sky...

once I had a miraculous experience with a happy ending...  Smiley Smiley Smiley
when my filter was pumping too high pressure of big air bubbles probably
due to my lack of proper adjustments on the water level or something rather,
one of my fishes (a zebra one) was out of the tank and landed on the floorboards
I panicked when I failed to see a it in the tank the moment I walked into my bedroom,
where my aquariam was on top of the table and found my zebra fish on the floor.
 Although I have cats in the house none were where he was lying, so touched by that  blessed circumstance.  Cool
Hesitantly I touched to see if it was alive with a fearful heart, was so stunned it moved so I quickly grabbed him gently and put him on my net and while holding it inside the waters I took off all the cat hair off its body and around the mouth,
then placed it in the tank, was abit slow moving at first than it started moving frantically and even now after one week it's still alive and well, I am so joyful that the miracule of my zebra fish of how blessed he was..... WOW so strangely awesome!!!  Grin Grin Grin
